During Canada‘s UN peacekeeping stint in the Balkans, prior to taking a more aggressive role with NATO, some 100 soldiers became casualties, and were often put in impossible situations - taken hostage, mined, fired at, resented, threatened - all the while with imprecise orders on whether they could, couldn‘t or shouldn‘t fight back.

Perhaps the closest the Canadians came to war, or battle, was in the Croatian invasion of the Medak Pocket in the Serb-held Krajian area of Croatia in the fall of 1993. Yet, for political reasons, virtually no publicity was given to the Canadians‘ trial by fire.

I'm trying to remember the name of that officer who was photographed chained or tied to a pole after the Serbs overran the UN 'safehaven' ( ) of Srebrenica. That is an image that the UN will never be able to live down.

What is said at about 5:25 of the second video is a sentiment that most, but unfortunately not all, share here on CKA. In fact, I would say that most civilized people would agree with it. Those that don't, well you're safe to bleat while others defend your right to be a burden to the species.

When I hear "Srebrenica", this is the image that usually pops into my mind.

Never live it down is right.

These were hard to watch. You're right the Canadian public should be proud of those who fought for peace. Thanks again Hyack.

Sometimes peace has to be made, before you can think about trying to maintain it.
