During WWII Canada had the third largest navy in the world, after Britain and the USA.

Today Canada doesn't need a large military as it can rely on the US for its defence, much like the Republic of Ireland relies on Britain.

Are you trying to start some flaming here..... We all know that Canada does not rely on the US to defend its borders.... Do you really want to go on that road?? Image

Oh, so you still rely on the British, do you?

GB for the third time check your PM box!!

The Irish depend on the British to protect them? I don't know about you, but I'd sooner have a group of Irishmen backing me up in a scrap.

The Irish depend on the Irish to protect themselves mostly from the British.

Now, now! We'll have none of that Irish vs UK stuff. As a proud product of Eire I'll have you know that there are thousands of Irishmen serving the Crown in the British Army/Royal Navy/Royal Air Force.

I won't be taking kindly to plastic paddies from the US slagging any of us from those isles off!

Stick to the Liberals!

PS GB you are a total dick living in third world Bolton. Look out of your window and see the garbage on your streets and the shithead kids swarming around you as the country gently decays further. (I just got back from two fun packed weeks in the sceptic Isle).

Unlike some that you may know, I have been to the auld sod and I keep in touch with my family in Sligo and Galway and my wife and I are currently hosting my cousin's daughter for the summer.

Without a major adversary ala the USSR (or someone else), Canada simply lacks the political will to build a major navy. Canada may be wealthy and can afford more, but the populace in general isn't willing to spend massive amounts on defence in peacetime.

Then Canada had better be prepared to be caught with her knickers about her ankles.

No country was ever attacked because it was too strong.

A Canada without a decent Navy (and Army and Air Force) will one day in this century be a Canada without a Northwest Passage and perhaps a few other things.

Relying on the USA for Canada's principle defense is a foolish thing to do because with a change of the political winds it may well be the USA you need protection from.

thats one thing i always believed in...build up your military being completely oblivious to your allies..guess the liberals figured the usa would always fight our battles so they stopped funding the military

It is a sad mistake to disarm in the belief that someone else will defend you if needed.

That applies to nations as well as to individuals.

bootlegga bootlegga:
Here's another picture of the Bonnie and an honest to God RCN battlegroup...

http://www.canadaka.net/pic-11029.html

Not a lot of people know it, but we also used the Magnificent as a troop carrier to carry our troops to the Suez in 1956 to help defuse that crisis (that also won Pearson his Nobel Peace Prize).

There was a bit of an urban legend in the navy that when Bonnie was decommisioned, she was swapped out mid-ocean to the Indian Navy (since she was fresh out of refit) for the old HMIS Vikrant.

That's just grand! India gets our carrier, Pakistan gets our tanks and the Netherlands gets the Chinooks. Canada the arms dealer.
