I'm assuming this, since Canadians can be awarded medals and decorations, but cannot recieve titles without permission of the government (which they don't since adopting the Nickel Resolution).
On a side note, and I don't mean to go off topic to far. Does anyone find it ironic that Chretien would not allow Black to accept a British peerage, and complained loudly when two other Canadians were awarded, but it's perfectly acceptable for a possible future PM to hold a French citizenship? I'm just wondering is all.

Americans generally are not supposed to accept foreign knighthoods and etc. although the government and the military typically do very little about it other than to decline recognizing the foreign medals on uniforms.

Of course, every thing has its exceptions and so do these things.

Saudi Arabia awarded the equivalent of knighthood to several Americans for heroism during the 1991 war and the military recognizes the respective medals and ribbons accordingly.

Pretty much, if the State Department decides that a foreign country would be offended if a US serviceman declined a title then the Dept. of Defense tends to go along with it in the interests of international amity.

Of course, the titles have no legal weight in the USA while they may have legal weight in the country awarding the title.

I have my own little collection of interesting things including an Intelligence Star that I honestly don't why it was awarded to me and will probably never know why.

My guess would be that a foreign knighthood of this type harkens back to the days of vassalge and implied military service/loyalty. On the other hand, citiizenship does nothing like like.

And as he is not PM yet, what he does in his private life is his own business. I guess it could be worse, we could have a PM who once wrote a letter advocating Alberta essentially separate...

They are all in the order of the bath, which is against the American constitution.

I agree he's not PM yet, and God willing will never be. I still find it interesting and a bit hypocritical, but that's me. Let's not forget he also campaigned for the Parti-Quebecois so that's no different than a letter.
