bootlegga bootlegga:
In light of these breakdowns;

Ancient- up to 500AD - Alexander the Great
Middle Ages- up 1300 - Genghis Khan
Pre-Modern - 1800 - Gustavus Adolphus
Modern-1914 - Napoleon
Post modern - Arthur Currie

That is the best break down I have seen.

talking Kingdom of Heaven here I'm talking real history).

Pre-Modern-Stonewall Jackson, if he hadn't of been jerked around by some of the other generals and had his unfortunate accident the civil war could of had a different ending?

Lee needed Jackson much more than most historians believe. He balanced Lee out.

ABSOLUTELY! If Jackson had been alive on the first day at Gettysburg, the Confederates would not have ended the day without taking Culp's Hill on the north end of cemetary ridge. If Jackson had been alive on the 3rd day, he'd have talked Lee out of Pickett's charge.

Not that the Confederates had any chance in the Civil War, but Gettysburg would not have been the decisive battle had Jackson lived.

Yep, The North win out in the long run, they are had to much man power and industrial strength. The interesting think to think about is how much longer could the South had held on.

I'll put forward W.T. Sherman.

A spotty record as a tactician, but an excellent strategist. He was a Jackson at a higher level. His operations were the basis for some of the most successful modern commanders and influential thinkers.

General Winter would be my choice. He defeated Napoleon and then went on to defeat Hitler 140 years later.

Yes, excellent suggestion. Sherman knew that modern war was Total War and had no problem bringing it down on civilians. He was also REALLY pissed that the Confederates killed his gay lover, James McPherson, by shooting him in the back at Atlanta.

Shelby Foote said that the Union fought that war "with one hand tied behind its back." If Jackson had lived, the Union may have had to start using "its other arm."

Yeah, but he mostly kills civilians whereas General Winter typically just kills German and French troopers.

Field Marshall Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel 'The Desert Fox'. He is thought by many to have been the most skilled commander of desert warfare in WWII.

You might add Gregori Zhukov to your list.
He was there with the Red Army from Moscow to Berlin. He was behind most of the Soviets greatest victories and even had the balls to stand up to Stalin.

A fairly popular theory. Explains why Grant took McPherson's death so differently than the hundreds of other close officers he lost. Made him especially angry that McPherson was shot in the back on retreat. Some historians have speculated that that may be why he was so ruthless in his march through Georgia.

Grant or Sherman? You've linked both of them to this.

So it's only speculation then? The way you wrote it came across as fact. Is there some reputable source for this as I have never heard of it.
