I just moved from Alexander 134 reserve into Edmonton in search of a job. I am currently living with a friend. I was wondering what sort of social programs are available that can help me get started in searching for a job?

Thanks.

Try going to the local union halls, submit a resume with your work experience they will put your name on the new hire list.

example Insulators Hall in Edmonton

Here in Québec we have 2 programs that help out.

The first helps you determine what kind of job fits you best.
The second is a job hunting club... I start that one on Monday.
They'll help you with preparing your CV, pro-active job hunting and intervue techniques.
The costs are covered by the local employment offices.
These probably exists in other provinces too.

Unless it's a government job don't mention your race since most employers could care less

If you got the skills, send in your resume like anybody else and get lucky. Shouldn't matter what or who you are.

go to a housing construction site, ask of a few hours work doing grunt cleanup. dont complain about the rate, and work at a pace that makes you break a sweat. i garantee before you do this 3 times, someone will offer a job.

What kind of program do you need to look for job? Buy a paper and visit an employment centre like everyone else. Once you're part of a union then you can have them look for your work. Until then, it's your responsibility to do the looking.

According to books like 'What color is your parachute" the order of method that an employer will use to fill a position are:
1. Fill the position from within
2. Get someone from outside who the employer knows, or at least comes highly recommended by someone the employer trusts
3. Use a recruitment agency and/or the HR department
4. Search through the unsolicited resumes that arrive over time
5. Post the job in the newspaper or on the internet

and what do most of us do when we are looking for jobs? we just about approach things in the exact opposite order. Silly isnt it?

So let me ask you what the value is to finding someone that needs 1 days worth of work done? A: pretty big! it will land you a job faster than looking on the internet

My best advice: pick 2 or 3 methods and increase your odds.

and one more thing: you might look at that list and say "ah man! its a who you know world  "

but that isnt the correct way to see things, the best way to see things is "Its a who you meet world" [B-o] because who you meet becomes who you know.
