This is a painting of the Iroquois' creation myth. The Iroquois are Native Canadians which have lived in North America since the 16th century. They are a magnificent people with the richest culture and traditions.

In this painting we have the Sky Woman, who lives in a happy world in the sky, with her husband and unborn twins. When she tells her husband she has become pregnant he becomes enraged, becuase no one in their world gets pregnant. He tears out a huge tree and a hole is left which goes down to the water below. When the woman peers into this hole her husband pushes her down and she falls to the water. The water animals of the sea are determined to help the woman, so a turtle dives down and brings up mud. When the woman rubs the mud all over the turtle's back it grows and grows until it becomes the size of North America. The woman then sprinkles dust into the sky and creates the sun, moon and stars. The two twins she gives birth two create every other element in the world and litter the earth with nature.

Aboriginal Canadians are unfortunatley misreated and left to a life of poverty, and disease on the reserves they are forced upon. I am posting this painting to help others be more aware of the beauty within Native culture.

Please respond with your opinions on my painting, and on the rights and freedoms available to Aboriginals in Canada today.

Thank You,

Megan Couche

I know, it's awful with all those armed guards around keeping you on the rez and mistreating you. I mean they don't even make you pay taxes there - oh the humanity! It's really tough having all the rights and freedoms of other Canadians, and then a bunch more on top - a difficult burden to bear, I'm sure. Plus no responsibilities - act up and the govt coddles you.

The art is nice - all cultures produce nice art. When it's used as an excuse to not get off your butt, but blame somebody else for your problems, it doesn't look so nice anymore.

Oh, and when you say this:
Quote:

Richest as opposed to other people with poorer culture and traditions? And you mean the Iroquois have been in North America 600 years less than Europeans? So much for First Nations, eh?

Megan, forgive me, but it looks like a painting of a bunch of white people. Are you sure this would not be offensive to the Iroquois?

Nice picture...I have something similar posted on our fridge., made by my son in his kindergarten class.

Honestly, if you are between the ages of 5 and 8, it is very good.....if not.....I guess art just isn't your thing.
