Excellent find and so our national shame. If only Canadians would judge ourselves by the same standards we judge others by.

While there may be some truth to the res school victims plight it seems blown way out of proportion.Lots of the peeps I worked with in Nunavut were sent to res schools and not one regreted it or was abused.
They had no problem taking the cheque though, most just shook there heads, couldnt believe someone would just hand them some cash.

I know of people who were routinely raped as young as 5 years old Zig. Port Alberni has mass graves of children who were the offspring of the priests and nuns.

This is not in any way overblown. The Government played an active role in this up to 1970 and were issuing death threats to the producer of this video. This is not overblown at all.

It was kind of a standing joke in Baker,Gjoe-haven,Rankin and most of those other comminities, they are all related so you dont keep something like that quiet.
I'm sure some atrocities did happen but not even close to the extent some would have you think.
About 20 I knew personally were glad they were sent to the city for an education.
Not one was abused.

Are you disputing the original post with anicdotes? It not a matter of opinion the mass graves exist.

They do but the article states the problem was mainly at port Alberni so the blanket accusations dont work. They werent all sent to the same school.

That's also why blanket compensation did exactly what the elders said it would do and now the jails are full and alcoholism and drug abuse is rampant.

They should be going after the guilty individuals instead of blaming the whole country.
Throwing guilt money at the natives isnt going to help anything.

You think if that many died there would be more people talking about it then.I lived and worked with hundreds and hundreds of Innuit from all over the arctic and most were sent to res schools and are still alive with no tales of abuse or hardships.
My cook spent 25 years from one side of the barrenlands to the other up there and is well known throughout the arctic. We had many long talks about all this and to this day she hasnt yet met someone who had relatives abused or murdered.

Im not saying it didnt happen in some places but it wasnt a genocide.

Its never genocide or wrong when Canada does it. For all the criticizing Canadians do about other nations and cultures we are the very first to mitigate our own crimes.

The govt. gave them cash, some guys got cheques for 30 grand.I had a hard time keeping guys at camp when the payouts started.

At any rate if the church was responsible then why are all Canadians made to feel guilty about this?

Why should any other country in the world feel guilty for anything they do either?

Should we feel guilty for relocating them also?
They would have starved to death if they didnt.
Baker lake and gjoehaven are both relocated communities.

We would rather look into the backyard of our American friends and be critical of the USA for doing so allows us to forget about our own injustices...

I think we should feel guilty our government tried to eliminate the native culture in the method described. No amount of "good deeds" after the fact changes that.

You keep mitigating what happened as if because not every native endured the same horrific abuse.

Not every priest abused young boys but the church as a whole had to accept guilt and apologize.

Scapes article states quite clearly what happened and genocide however an emotionally charged term fits the bill.
