herbie herbie:
You don't live in rural BC do you?
Half a dozen friends send their kids to the native run elementary school here. Some donate tuition as is still links with Catholic Church, some volunteer making lunches and snacks, as crossing guards, field supervisors in lieu of.
Public school is just cut, cut, cut, close schools, cut, yet another Pro-D day, drop this bus route, walkout, meddle with petty BS, ignore abuse at home, punish the victim of bullying as much as the perp, etc. etc.

Sooooo kind like the rest of Canada right?

ShepherdsDog ShepherdsDog:
There are some band run schools that are excellent. This is all dependent on the quality and interests of the band and chief. This can all change on an election if the band elects a chief and council who have other priorities.....esp personal enrichment.

They won't do that because the chiefs are corrupt....yeah.

as long as the taxpayers are paying into their dipshit system the sheep will baaaaaaaaaaa along.

Sounds like what you're advocating for is private schools, which is a different topic.

Far from it. It's do it right not either or. That'd be the day I'd ever support stoopid uniforms, piss tests, Jesus interludes and a school board that would've fired Alan Turing from the computer lab cuz he was queer!
It's just as silly making kids use a calculator before most of them grasp basic math concepts or dropping cursive writing altogether.

Well the ministries don't really decide the cuts. The provincial and local politicians decide the cuts. As long as you have a public system you're going to have the possibility of some politician wanting to make cuts. Ministries develop curriculum and allocate the budget the politicians give them.

BeaverFever BeaverFever:
housewife housewife:
Umm bullshit. Provincial Ministries are the experts at fucking up services such as education & health care.

In order for that to be true statement and not just hot air, please show how health care and education were better before the province came along and "fucked them up". Can you do that? No of course you can't. Just because you have personal complaints about some experience with this school or that hospital, or you have some health care expense that's not currently not covered in your province, doesn't make anything you said above true. And you fail to suggest who the experts might actually be.

$1:
Besides it has to be nationally run because of treaties
. Feds have to pay for it, there's nothing that requires them to actually deliver it.

If you are happy with your health care provincial minister of Health then congratulations. If you are happy with your local board and provincial education minister then again congratulations. I don't think government should be in the health care business. And as near as I can see schools have always been a problem.

As for the other that is how it is now for health care. As for the education you would have to ask ShepherdsDog he has much more info on how a rez schools are run. But from what I have read it doesn't sound like it's going well

Well what do you want to see? Obviously the economical choice of bringing the FN kids to where the schools ARE didn't work so damn well did it?
So we're kind of stuck with some examples like the one around here - 90 kms up a logging road where there's a $4 million (1990s $$) for about 24 kids. With an elegant 'traditional eagle's wings' roof that actually means it slopes down so they can't smash the windows from the street like they did on the box school that was there before. Teacher's residences that resemble bunkers so they'll still be there if they come to town for a weekend. Doctors and dentist who helicopter in weekly for impromptu clinics.
But you know what? I used to service the phone lines on the rez's here. In 30 years there's been a big improvement driven by those schools, those teachers, those Band councilors.
I mean really, these aren't a people who packed up and took a boat to America when things got shitty at home. Add on that once they're educated & skilled 90% of them do just that, leave.
Nowhere around here as bad as the rez's we see on the news - but it's a pretty damn bleak existence to a white guy from suburbia.
No choice at the moment. Cough up the $$

This is a pleasant surprise both for the news itself, and the reaction on this forum to it.

I wrote a two-part article for Vive Le Canada back in 2013 about the "reserve paradox", and how it affects Indigenous peoples in Canada. One thing I noted was the huge gaps in funding for FN communities as opposed to non-Native ones:

$1:

Not all non-Native assumptions are based on racism, of course. Some stem more from concerns that are in fact much more understandable, like the belief that the billions of dollars spent by Ottawa on Aboriginal people has not been a worthwhile use of taxpayer money. On paper, it seems like a lot of money, but the problem is that it’s much more complicated than most people realize. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the residential schools for Aboriginals were plagued by underfunding, often using money taken out of the existing Indian Affairs budget, and reducing the amount of money available for other projects. This underfunding was one of the many reasons why the residential schools were such a disaster for Aboriginal people.[12] It was the same story in the second half of the 20th century, when Harold Cardinal noted that the seemingly large amount of money spent by the federal government on supporting Aboriginal people had to divided among all the thousands of Aboriginal people and pay for all of their living expenses, in addition to anything else they might be interested in pursuing.[13]

The same problem still exists more than 35 years later. Aboriginal activist Aaron Paquette noted that Ottawa’s $10 billion a year on Aboriginal services amounts to $16,500 per person for all services, while the province of Alberta spends $18,000 per person on education funding alone. Aboriginal chief Carolyn Buffalo got just $90,000 to cover the housing costs of her band.[14] The northern Ontario reserve of Attawapiskat got a lot of coverage from the supposed mismanagement of the millions of dollars it got from Ottawa. The $90 million the reserve has received is not the amount of funding it’s gotten per year, but actually how much funding it’s gotten since Stephen Harper became Prime Minister in 2006. Attawapiskat has only received some $18 million a year since that time.[15] More generally, it’s been said that the federal government provides 20-30% less funding for Aboriginal education than non-Aboriginal schools that receive provincial funding.[16] One might also point out the fact that Aboriginal leaders are hardly the only ones who mismanage public funds, given the “significant gaps” that Ottawa’s own internal audits have shown in how the federal government is managing over a billion dollars meant for repairing Aboriginal infrastructure. And then there’s Ottawa’s own questionable spending of public money and clashes with the Parliamentary Budget Office over access to budgetary documents.[17]

Whites and natives have the same problems. Get over yourselves. Hell, now we got individuals claiming Native blood like its some sort of badge. Wow, be proud to who you come from but getting out of taxes. Looks like the Canadian government opened up a whole new can of worms of who is native and who is not, who is tax exempt and who is not.
