Anyway, natives don't have veto power to block a constitutional reform.

Irrelevant. Canada's laws as they stand on the books are consistent with International law. Our governments don't respect the law as it is so why bother trying to change it?
If Canada tried to change the law to fraudulently keep possession of the land that does not belong to Canada, there would be quite an international furor.

On June 29, 2006, Canada voted against adoption of the Draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples at the inaugural session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Irrelevant. That is not law and it passed anyway even without Canada's vote.

International laws are made of Declarations just like this one.

Canadian laws are sufficient ... IF our governments would obey them.

Political will would be sufficient, not the Canadian laws.

Oh I would settle for the political will to obey the laws. ;)

The will doesn't obey:

Irrelevant. They answer to us and we will tell them what to do ... through the media, through continued actions. They will get the message. People are Power!

The media are manufacturing people's consent.

That sounds like a derail. Better start another thread on that.

Wow this is quite the discussion!

Hi I am new to the forum. I Just finished reading over most of the posts in this discussion. I understand why natives take the free ride, I would. I also live next door to two native reserves, and have native friends and family.

Can anyone argue that the money causes fighting between natives and non natives? That it gives hard working natives a bad stereotype.

Nobody was actually present when this treaty was signed. Since no Canadian involved has even been alive for hundreds of years, it causes racisim, hate, loss of independence, and bad stereotypes. Its time to let it go, and close that chapter so we can be a better Canada, together!

I don't know, lotta off-reserve indians don't really care. We pay taxes off-reserve. Income taxes come off our paychegues. Like lots. Sure we have education, medical, dental. Big hairy deal who wants to be sick all the time. Sure we have stores big hairy deal. The grassroots indians get squat. The stores wants lotta money for their stuff. Most of the chiefs and councel are pushed by the 'old school' elders. Eccept the christian chiefs and councellors. They have a different agenda. Jesus paid taxes. I know whats going on in there. Monetary value? Gotta wait til the 'old school' elders die off I guess, lol. Maybe the 'new school' indians and todays whites can meet each other half way after that.

One thing to consider most of the Europeans would have died the first winter here if not for there native guides, and local knowledge. Some times the west has to really look at what it has done and then we may not be so quick to judge the natives . If you think it was fair read the Indian Act of Canada . Then you might see what an racist act was done to them .
