Brave of the organizers to focus the ceremonies around climate change, as opposed to less important issues like swimming in shit-water. Or drinking shit-water. Or any of the other shit-water related items this entire corrupt gong show is going to become infamous in history for.

I'm really mixed up now, I thought the games were in Rio, you sound like your descibing Victoria BC.

You're not supposed to say things like that out loud about Victoria. Or Montreal. Or Halifax. It upsets them greatly if anyone mocks their Great Green Dream.

Could you as an athlete honestly feel good about trying to win a gold medal knowing the reality of Brazilians lives?

So many of those athletes are singularly focused.. on themselves.

Sports events are typically the easiest, least intellectual, and lowest form of nationalism. Oh, hooray, yay, look at us, we won! Another shiny metal trinket shows how great our country is! Yay for us! This sort of low-hanging-fruit nationalism doesn't have time or any interest at all in the greater meta-questions surrounding it, especially with the Olympics that end up being the bane of any of the already disorganized and corrupt countries that host them. Greece 2004 is probably the worst recent example, as the over-spending, corruption, and graft that marked their Olympics is what essentially kicked off their overall national economic death-spiral. For dubious nationalistic purposes, built around the false pride of being an Olympic host country, they basically sacrificed their entire national future to the crooks at the IOC and the grifters at home who organized the event. There's nothing in the Olympics that is remotely worth any of the cost that goes into it.

Which is the reason why it is getting harder every year to find a realistic bid for the games. People are finally realizing the financing of the games has spiraled totally out of the realm of reality. The millions upon millions of dollars spent on the games will never be recovered in their lifetime, if ever!! The only countries willing to host the games are the ones where the local population have absolutely no say in the matter....Russia, China, N Korea.....

They're also focused not getting Zika when playing with the local entertainment, meanwhile.

It's so morally and ethically repellent that it makes the classic rip-off of an NFL team extorting a billion-dollar stadium in a city, to be built entirely at taxpayers expense, with the threat of moving the team elsewhere if the city doesn't cave in to them look like a bargain in comparison. Rio 2016 could end up doing to Brazil in terms of wasted/stolen/lost money the same thing that 2004 did to Greece.

Good analysis here of the collapse of the Brazilian economy and how the Olympics are the absolute worst thing that could have happened to them. No amount of national pride was even remotely worth the cost that country is paying right now and will be paying far into the future.

No way I'm watching the video of that leg break. Bad enough to see the still image. It reminds me of a few winter Olympics ago when that speed skater wiped out and dislocated his arm. Freaking OUCH!!!

Strutz, dont look at this either then.
