3.05% pay hike for our MPPs
By ANTONELLA ARTUSO, QUEEN'S PARK BUREAU CHIEF
TORONTO -- Ontario MPPs are getting their third pay hike in 16 months.
The base pay for an MPP will rise 3.05% Tuesday to $116,550 a year from $113,100, however almost all provincial politicians earn thousands of dollars more for additional duties such as serving in cabinet or on government committees.
NDP Leader Howard Hampton notes that this hike comes on top of the 25% pay hike the Liberals and Tories pushed through in December 2006, followed by another increase in April 2007.
"You add it all up, it's about a 35-36% pay increase in less than two years," Hampton said.
The legislation that ushered in the 25% salary hike also linked MPPs' pay to that of their federal counterparts.
MPPs make 75% of what MPs earn in Ottawa and their salaries rise in tandem.
MP pay is scheduled to go up 3.05% on Tuesday, and so will MPP salaries.
The base MPP salary was $88,771 annually prior to the 2006 pay hike, but the premier currently makes $202,788 a year, the leader of the official opposition takes home $175,531 and the third party leader gets $153,477.
The pay for additional duties is also going up.
DONATING RAISE
Hampton has been donating his 25% pay hike to charity because he said politicians don't deserve bigger raises than the average folk they represent.
Hampton said the Dalton McGuinty government's budget this week provides a 2% increase to social assistance recipients this year but the hike doesn't kick in until the fall.
Minimum wage rose only 75cents an hour, Hampton said.
"This will be a very significant increase for MPPs while the lowest paid in the province are getting next to nothing," Hampton said.
The NDP leader donated about $16,000 to charity last year and said he plans to keep giving the extra pay away.
Meanwhile, the government will release the annual "sunshine list" tomorrow which identifies public servants who make $100,000 or more a year. There were almost 34,000 Ontario public servants in the six-figure club last year, an increase of almost 24% in just one year.

well guess who gave himself a raise ? Dalton Mcguinty
and guess who else is making more ? provincial government employees , number making over $ 100,000 dollars a year, has jumped by a remarkable 25% . which is shocking and disgusting considering this province has lost 1000's of jobs this year .
i think its time dalton takes a paycut instead what do you think ?

I think all government mp or mla etc should need voter approval for a raise. When the country or a province has an election should be a place to vote for a 1 pay raise 2 pay to stay the same or 3 a 10 percent reduction in pay.

well that would be an interesting idea . think this raise really did lack voter imput .
doubt there was much interest for the idea from the general public , if we had asked people on the street i doubt to many were concerned if mpp's got all these pay raises .
they are starting to wonder why things are not geting done or going so well in this province , mean why has it lost so many jobs ? yet government employees continue to make even more money than previous years ?
how does that even make sense ?

Really? Did the Tories vote down the raise? John Tory on the vote, "We've got to make sure people who come to public life are not like me, where they can come regardless of the compensation," Your ignorance just got busted wide open again. Get a clue.
I don't necessarily agree with such a significant pay hike, but lose your partisan parroting and call out ALL the MPs that supported it.

It's only fair since minimum wage earners just got a 9% raise in Ontario.

well your right in fact tory did vote for the raise .
but he has cleary came out against all these civil servants who are making over $100,000 dollars a year even though the economy is slowing. ( read the other article i posted bob runichan is clearly quoted as being opposed to the fact that civil servents are making way more even though the economy is slower . )
mean in times like this shouldn't the government be showing some financial ristraint and not waste so much hard earned tax dollars ?

yeah they can go fill a penny jar now , with this extra money . i'm sure there just thrilled .
but in reality its the government employees who are making the big bucks , the 25% increase in the 100,000 club is shocking . especilly after a year full of plant closures and layoffs .
the provincial government should be ashamed of it self .

Some civil servants make too much, but it's somewhat relevant. I guarantee when you actually get a big-boy job, those that make more than you will be "overpaid" and those that get paid less have "well-paying" jobs. We're going into a recession (perhaps) that has WAY more to do with the United States than bureaucrats (and i'm assuming you'll be targeting ALL civil servants like firefighters, cops and MPs), so this is really just partisan deflection - unless you honestly believe that lowering salaries will offset the economic downturn

And what about the FEDERAL bureaucracy? Are you committed to this or just being an ignorant partisan whiner?

well with the economy the way it is there is absoluelty no reason in the world to justify these pay increases for civil servants . its disgusting considering so many hard workign ontarians cannot find descent work yet these people get huge raises and belong to some sunshine list . i do not see what there is for the sun to shine over this kind of bs .
it sounds like the hardworking taxpayer is geting screwed by these people .

This sounds like someone whining about their station in life more than an objective political analysis. You bitched out of addressing the Federal bureaucracy and you dodged the salient point that a probable recession is linked to the U.S. downturn more than members of the $100,000 club.
You're nothing more than an ignoramus pushing his trade. Don't come back until you get a clue

Lets see.
Healthcare? Far far better under the Liberals then the PCs. Don't let the fact that most of us in the profession think that bother you.
Highways? No worse now then the cuts under the PCs.
Economy? Lower unemployment must really suck then eh?
I love how you attack the Liberals for the economy yet somehow Harper gets a pass. It seems to me that so many on here were praising his foresight for cranking back the tax cuts, lowering spending, shelving military purchases, and of course turning a 14 billion dollar surplus into a 2 billion dollar surplus with little or nothing to show for it.
Of course everybody pointed to the wisdom of such actions in light of the US recession and its impending affect on Canada.

Translation: Ryan's ignorance got busted wide open again and now he's throwing an intellectual temper tantrum. I think Ryan's being ripped off by whatever trashcan community college he's breezing through as so far his "education" as amounted to Jack. Quote: honestly the ontario liberals are a joke and doing the province no good , yet geting paid pretty damm well for doing nothign . Honestly, Ryan's attempt at big-boy political discourse is a joke. He knows nothing about what he posts, dodges salient points and his nothing more than a partisan parrot. Quote: i'll say they deserve a raise when health care , our highways and economy is doing better until then they do not deserve it.
Good one, genius. Doctors should only get paid if people are cured, right? How about we take your college teacher's pay and flush it down the crapper as look at their educational product. YOUR government sold the 407 (so who's holding the Liberals to a higher standard?) and what on earth does a cop in Toronto have to do with a recession. You're a first rate whiner and you fail to grasp political concepts that any mouthbreather could fumble through and as per usual you've made an ass of yourself.
Night, skippy.
