There's something is in the air near Sarnia, Ontario. But it's not just in the air. It's also in the water, the soil, and in the residents themselves: alarming levels of toxic chemicals, believed to be behind the area's skewed birth ratios. In Aamjiwnaang, two girls are born for every boy.

The Aamjiwnaang (pronounced ham-jew-nong ) reserve, near Sarnia, sits squarely in the heart of the valley, where smokestacks from companies such Dow, Suncor, Shell, Imperial Oil, Nova, LanXess (Bayer), and Royal Polymer define the landscape. Some of their chemicals maybe "endocrine disruptors."

Sarnia is going to be a real fun place in about 20 years.

Which makes up for all the decades before...

Frankly, I see no downside being surrounded by women.

I guess you need to live right on top of Chemical Valley to be affected.

As I now live 40 km from there and know lots of people now who have grown up in the area..

My wife - 2 boys
Her brother - 2 boys
cousin 1 - boy
cousin 2 - 2 boys
cousin 3 - 2 boys
cousin 4 - boy
cousin 5 - 2 girls
cousin 6 - 1 boy
cousin 7 - 1 boy and 1 girl
friends 1 - 3 boys
friends 2 - 3 boys

It's 18 boys to 3 girls...

Lots of boys in the area to go around....

Edit: All but one are under the age of 5. Only one father and one mother did not grow up within 50 km of Sarnia.

We are approaching the moment when, nowhere in the world, brides will be able to keep their dresses white during their weddings because of air pollution.

We'd all choke to death before that happens....

What concerns me more is the chemicals they are finding in our drinking water. The medications people take are ending up in our water supply and currently it is only getting worse. We have no idea what effects they might have on us over years of consumption and affects millions of people.

Here an idea: rename the Huron lake to LanXess-Bayer lake!
