I can't belive the mayor of Toronto. Let me say that even though i live in the GTA I still care about Toronto and with all the taxes and money he gets instead of spending it on what he thinks the city wants how about he spends it on something usefull. Maybe of the homless!!?? There are so many homeless people that would be glad to have a home so why not put them in a home instead of thinking that by spending money on stupid useless things that make us average and upper class lifes better when the others have worse lifes so be considereate mabye he could spend money on that what do you think?

Putting homeless people in a home and leave them there is not going to solve the problem. Helping homeless is not a one time spending spree, it is a large and long term operation. I don't think Torontonians pay enough taxes to make that happen...

Indeed Toronto's tax rates are far less than in some areas of the GTA. Building slums for the homeless is a bad idea. Many are mentally challenged and may not even be able to live alone. The problem is deeply rooted in that old city. Toronto doesn't actually have much money to spend, if they did the public transport system, roads and bridge developments will all come higher in the pecking order than the homeless.

I see although if the taxes are raised then the homless can be watched by nurses or voulenteers if they are mentally chalanged and if they can live in a low budget housing arangment they can mabye start to have a better life. I do agree with what you say about the taxes somewhat but there are taxes that torntonians pay that no one else pays. I think the taxes could be put to better use and one huge problem is the homeless

I like your ideology... but volunteers??? You cannot have volunteers handle the lifes of mentally challenged people 24/7...

And nurses... well... I think we need them in hospitals, so they can take care of EVERYBODY that needs help

Not everyone who needs a nurse is in a hospital, Brenda, and nurses work in many places... they're not limited to hospitals.

Its true nuses work in specialty care facilities although they are expensive places to live. I think that by simply starting a new building in Toronto where homeless can live mabye they can be evaluated on their mental capablilities many people I know are mentally challenged but they are able to support themselves and they are also need very litlle attention a cheep mental care facility is not unheard of.

Until ALL levels of govt. re-evaluate their (our) priorities, nothing of signifigance will ever be done to help the homeless anywhere. Pols are forever claiming that "there just isn't any money", yet last year Edmonton city council allocated 88 million dollars for a new art gallery!
It has always been, and always will be that pols at all levels will pander to the upper echelons of society, and as well 'line their own pockets', before they will ever help the 'down & outters' of a society!

I think thats the problem people in government are heartless becasue they don't care they probably spit on the homeless. Becasue your right to open this art galley could have opened a nice ass 88 houses to make homeless people live in luxury!! What is wrong with humans today!!

There are nurses who work in hospitals and mental health centres that do "street nuring" voluntarily. I have done it in the past and it was very rewarding. We had a store from clinic and worked from it. Many people and companies donated supplies and food. We connected with some people who needed to be seen regularly and have treatments. And in some cases we set people up with drug addiction programs and saw some successes.. Its was all good.

Oh and some mental health nurses were retirees who didn't want to stay at home and do nothing. One of our nurse volunteers was a surgeon's wife.

enough about nurses. this thread is about homelessness in toronto.
i think first and foremost what Toronto needs is to more social housing The mayors new plan is to improve on the social housing that currently stands in Toronto, as well as develop the regent Park area. These are both noble tasks, but what about the ten of thousands of families that are waiting on new affordable housing? This is one reason people become homeless in this city. The safety net is faulty, lacking all together. It is about time we turned old factories, like ones in and around the railroad in to livable space for the poor families and individuals of the city. Local economies should prosper if more individuals are given the change to integrate into the working community.

homlessness in Toronto. Take a look at the numbers. These are 2002 stats. you can count on the fact that these numbers have grown significantly since 2002.
http://www.toronto.ca/homelessness/index.htm

Poverty in Toronto is a bigger problem than homelessness. If our governments don't properly invest in social housing in the near future, many of those poor families will surely become homeless.
