The Ontario government is going to spend more than $2 billion this year to improve provincial roads and highways.

Transportation Minister Jim Bradley said in a statement the investment will "create thousands of construction jobs that strengthen our economy and keep our roads safe."

The $2 billion figure represents a 20 per cent increase in spending from the previous year.

Some of the key construction projects in and around the GTA will include:

* Widening the QEW from six to eight lanes from Burloak Drive to Trafalgar Road in Oakville to add HOV(high occupancy vehicle) lanes.
* Repairing the northbound express lanes on Highway 427 from the QEW to Highway 401 in Toronto.
* Widening Highway 401 from four to six lanes from Woodstock to Cambridge.
* Repairing the southbound lanes on Highway 400 from Forbes Road to Highway 11 in Simcoe County.

In total, the repair work will cover 472 kilometres of highways. More than 100 bridges will also be built or repaired during the construction period.

Repairing deteriorated infrastructure is good, but adding lanes to highways is ultimately a waste.

I wonder if it's coming out of general revenue or a gas tax.

It would be kind of ironic to use gas tax money to build extra lanes. Kind of like buying a bigger belt to solve a weight problem.

Still, adding lanes might relieve congestion for a short while, but in the longer run encourage sprawl and further congestion. In other words, the solution is the problem.

It's awful. I leave my house at 5:30 in the morning to go to work, and we still hit traffic. Adding can't make it worse than it already is. Sure it may not work, but it's better than nothing.

If it doesn't work but costs money, it's worse than nothing.

Better to put the money into transit.

What about environmentally freindly? What ever happned to take the bus? I guess the governemnt is saying that by getting more lanes on the highway you can drive more cars or take the bus i guess if you really have to. The GO bus goes so many places. The train is faster. Why not take one of those I get to toronot faster then ever before when I took the train a year ago. Now what we are getting is the government is trying to show us that he knows how to make the economy stronger but screw the envioment at the same time he needs to get a better advisor or something mississauga seems to be doing fine.

Buses = more traffic more people taking the bus instead of their car= less traffic you know what i mean plus mississuga has crappy tranist at the time buses aren't going to make it hard to travell we have very litlle traffic right now in most places

im on streakers side. repairing roads and bridges is all gravy, but we cant be putting all our tax money in to a couple stretches of road. In the end, we really need to be spending more money on buses and trains. Our current transit systems are satisfactory, bu the better our trainsit the better off we'll all be from wawa to ottawa.
