You can just ask anyone who used to work for Marine pipeline.Sometimes it's just cheaper to shut the doors then pay someone $300.00 just to show up for work. Or ask any old member of the UMWA in the elk valley what the unions did for them. The OE's pipeline contract is still a PDF on their site, you can check out the absurd rates yourself and then ask why they dont do much lining these days.
Both big unions that got their ass handed to them and had all there members unemployed with their pensions reduced to pennies on the dollar.
I've seen people shot and had their houses burnt to the ground during wobbles,my stepdad allmost got killed in Yellowknife by one of the brothers who thought he would convince miners to strike by blowing them up.
Ya,unions have their place now.

RUEZ RUEZ: Pimpbrewski Pimpbrewski: RUEZ RUEZ: The problem with unions is they reward and protect lazy people. Right on ! I see it every day when I go to work. I can't tell you the amount of times I've been told to slow down at work by a fellow employee. The interesting thing is, right in our contract it states that any employee who opts out of the union or refuses to pay union dues must be terminated within five days. Rediculous.
There are several reasons why they tell you to slow down.
1. They really are lazy.
2. Job protection. If Ruez is going to bust his ass and do the work of two people and even though the job was engineered and costed to be done by two people Ruez has shown management that if one operator busts his ass then management can lay off one person per shift. The person getting laid off on Ruez's shift is Ruez because he has the least amount of senority. Also, now that it's expected of Ruez to do all this work it's expected that he maintains this rate all the time.
3. Everyone is different and can't work safely like Ruez. Because management saw Ruez doing the work of two and decided run the work with just one worker the worker on the opposite shift to Ruez has now been injured on the job. He'll be off on comp for 2 years and will return with restrictions for the rest of his time there. He also won't be able to lift his grandkids once they weigh over 20 pounds.
4. Quality. Yes, Ruez can work fast and ensure quality but the person who replaced the guy who got injured can't ensure quality when working at that rate. Bad product has now gotten through to the customer. It's costing Ruez's employer $5million to rectify the problem. The company is looking for a scape goat and wants to send a message to the employees. Through product traceability they find that the bad product appears to have been produce right at the end of Ruez's shift. Ruez hasn't completed his probationary period yet so he is promptly fired.

Automation!
Also, if their engineers are worth their salt, the jobs will be designed so there is no excuse for laziness. It's also poor supervision that allows laziness to happen.

Ask the Ontario teachers what they think of their union brothers and sisters. They have no problem watching people lose their jobs if it means a few more bucks in their pension fund.

What makes you say that?
From what I can tell there is going to be a shortage of teachers soon.

They bought up a few struggling mines here and gloryholed them after laying off a few thousand,E-mails sent to Ruth who was then head of that union were answered by her and basically said too fucking bad,we need a minimum 10% return on our investments. They could have made 6% for 2 years and then 20% as new seams were opened up but thats what glory holing is,taking the cream and burying the rest.
No options including working with our union were even considered.I think the OTPF is one of the richest in Canada.I,ve still got all the emails from her from all our union members.
Unions are supposed to look after and help out the brothers and sisters regardless of what union your in.

well I gues mtbr minimum wage jobs are plentiful in Alberta its true. I seen an ad on TV that the 7 eleven was looking for help and so is tim hortons. my job is a union job.. we just ratified and I earn 70.000 and I am worth it.. the problem is that the owners of business like banks make billions in profits .. give bonuses to upper management and pay dick shit to the front line workers who have to beg people for their business when they come in to buy a money order... and by the way my union got us 6% each yr over the next 3..not too shabby and 5 weeks vac after 10yrs... any way I would take a union job over non union any day and no I am not lazy and I work shifts ..and the job I do well it requires university ed..

the arguemnt for union or non-union will never die, we will find out in the end. Merit shops will disapoint those that are part of them.
I will always be union because of the benifits, wages and knowing that i will just have to worry about the work I do and my wages will taken care of.
I understand those that have been apart of a union that has taken them for a ride, but in this day there are more unions that are working to improve the relationship between managment and the worker with long term relationships in mind.
You may argue that the unions are building their pensions but the union that I belong to along with many others have accountability built in now.
As for Marine Pipe Line I looked at the contract and yeas there may have been some crazy shit written but what I did notice is there was two groups of signatures on the contract union and MANAGEWMENT. This is true for all union contracts.
Do not blame unions because of weak management!!!!!!

yep blame all the world troubles on the unions.
you keep going on how the unions are killing all the companies but every union contract that I can find has two groups of signatures.
I know of a situation that everybody blames the unions for and the truth is the higher ups at the company are the real blame.
I worked at a factory through a contractor, we were making up grades to the process and moving equipment to make things more efficiant and at the same time they were converting over to metric.
The head engineer came down to the floor and wanted to know how come we had put all the tooling in crates. deciding that the union guys were not in the know he ordered the fork truck driver to dispose of the tooling because new tooling would be needed in the ocnversion. He also ordered that the stuff had to be destroyed so no one could take it.
all the stuff was destroyed before the engineer realized he was wrong. this was the beginning of the end.
The story in the town the unions were greedy, the truth the company went about 1000 000 over due to having to buy new tooling, other poor decisions made by the bosses in the up grade that ended up costing 500 000. this all made the headoffice look at other options.
go to sarnia ontario, it was common practice for the longest time to settle union agreements to keep things going and many times managment was putting offers on the table because there was no long term vision and the goal was to settle and get on with it so the year would look good and everyone would get a bonus. no one cared as many of the people making the agreement for the companies were ready for retiremetn and had nothing to loose.
my grandfather received a =n indexed pension because of lazy management all his life he never made over 25000 today on pension he is making close to 70 000. this was given to the unions to settle early.this pension was held by the company and therefore comes off their bottom line.
so in your world you would want the unions to walk away from a good offer because it was too much
i think you should accept the fact for every failure that you can pin on a union there is a failure that can be pinned on management. this is proven through the fact that union membership is down but stats indicate the bankruptcies are on the rise.
