It doesn't matter if they chose not to run. The fact is it was a one party election. Right away, the election removed the franchise from anyone who wanted to vote anything other than right of centre.

This is why we need to supprt elections now. If the Liberals and NDP see this as not going away they will take part. Grant Devine should run as an independent.

Perhaps, Albertans should preasure their parrty. If Manitoba supports this I think the NDP will run.

bootlegga -

if the centre right parties weren't running, I wouldn't be PO'ed at the centre-left, I would be PO'ed at the centre right for not getting there act together and running.

You have NOBODY to blame but the centre left parties who didn't run candidates.

They had every right to run in those elections, but they CHOSE not too.

Think it would be a good time to try bloc voting?

It's not about being unable to get their act together. They boycotted an illegitimate election. It's not up to Alberta to decide how the upper chamber of CANADA's parliament gets filled.

Then why haven't the courts barred it? What is more why haven't the Liberals and NDP worked to pass senate reform legislation?

It's useless Hurley. These kool-aid drinkers will never understand reason. All they see is an opportunity to force their narrow agenda on the rest of the country.

I'm all for senate reform as long as its done on a national level, not piecemeal by province.

Western Canadians had an opportunity for senate reform and rejected it (Charlottetown Accords). We could already have an equal and elected Senate. It's time for the West to accept the consequences of their actions.

Why would Grant Devine be eligible to run. Wasn't he convicted of something in the province of Saskatchewan? Or was he just trounced by the NDP? I know there was some controversy over something. I would think he would have a hard time getting elected after getting demolished in the elections of the early 90's.
The conservatives better come up with someone better than Grant Devine. I don't want a conservative running that has a history of failure and perhaps even culpability for something done in the past that can be seen as criminal or almost criminal.
If I were a Canadian Conservative I would hunt for better. IMHO :)

No, there were others in his cabinet; I think there was as much corruption in the Calvert Government. People were mad at Devine since he's the one who proposed the GST, and HST, but since it has been decided these are fair taxes and Romanow introduced the less fair PST.

In 2003 Devine ran as an independent and almost one, I think it's a shame he didn't he would have been a good politician and it would have been good for Saskatchewan. Devine is a good economist, and was a good policy maker. The current oil boom and can be linked to policies the PC’s brought in and the NDP preserved.

This won't gain any acceptance down east. All it does is reinforce the stereotype that we are spoiled children throwing a temper tantrum.
