Nothing is for free. Some people just think it is when they don't get a bill stuck in front of them.

I find it interesting when people perceive tax rebates as the government giving them money when it was theirs in the first place.

The French or German systems are the best, bar none. Canada and the US would do well by adopting 1 of those.

Try showing up at a hospital in the states without insurance...or try getting service then filling out the insurance forms. The insurance companies will laugh in your face. You'll be dead on the floor before you get service.

So the Canadian government is supposed to pay your medical bills if you decide to go to the states? She would have filled out the forms she would have been paid, no different then any american insurance company.

Brutal article, our health care in Canada is no comparison to the USA, it is way better - no question.

Or tax dollars go toward supporting a universal health care system for everyone - not to fund an industry of health insurance.

The US federal government dictates that emergency services must be made available regardless of the ability to pay. It's one reason that we have illegal immigrants all getting up in our statez.

Emergency services, ya, but that's only 1 part of Healthcare.

If you are about to die, the hospitals will help you regardless of pay. However, they will only fix you up to get you stabilize, but you won't die.

My wife who was born and raised in Toronto said the same thing till she moved here to the states. Now she worries about her family in Canada recieving proper care ion the future.

Neither country is anywhere near to top of the pile according to the WHO. But NONE of the countries near the top of the pile have anything resembling America's private system.

Canada's system needs accountability. And what's with all these cut backs? Where are all these surplus budgets coming from?

My only real experience with Canada's health care was in Saskatchewan. Broken neck, ribs, shoulder and punctured lung. I have no complaints.

My only experience with America's health care was at a party where a drunk girl broke her finger. And bad, it went straight sideways. I hadn't started drinking yet and said I could take her to the hospital. She looked at me like I was nuts and said "I can't afford a 70 dollar emergency room fee." One of her friends straitened her finger out and they put it on ice.

Being from SK, that never would have occurred to me. My wreck cost me zero out of pocked dollars. Oh, and the public insurance in SK paid well enough to put me through school. :o

I can say my latest foray in the Canadian health system impressed me. I had to go to emergency on Sunday, and it was quite busy for a Sunday. I was in, had a major procedure done(major to me anyway)and out in just over two hours. That didn't seem to bad to me. The doctor recommended a CT scan and I had that today, just three days later. I still can't find a family doctor but I was impressed with the service the Prince George hospital offered me.

I spend a month of the year in Key Largo FL - buy a shitload of insurance before I go. Never had to use it besides getting a perscription.

But if you look at the stats we spend half as much per capita in Canada and live longer...You think you pay through the nose now, the insurance companies live on the other half of what Americans pay.

Now it doesn't take a trip to the doctor to see the difference - Cubans pay WAYYYYYYYYY less then the Americans and live just as long.

You have a private system that is invested in keeping you out of the hospital and preventing you from receiving care to save money...and you have a public system that is invested in preventative medicine to keep all people healthy and will treat you no matter what stage of illness you are at. AND IT COST LESS.

Check the stats, immigrants, illegal or not, tend to utilize the health care systems far less then anyone else. Also they tend to be working and paying taxes and doing jobs that the rest of us are too lazy or too proud to do. Blaming your health care problems on immigrants is scapegoating and is racist.
