Dems Rip McCain, McCain Rips Obama as Leaders Try to Revive $700B BailoutQuote:
Paulson feared the deal was falling apart, sources told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos.
As Democrats met in the White House's Roosevelt Room after the meeting with Bush, Paulson told them, "Please don't blow this up," according to sources.
Sources say Frank was livid, saying, "Don't say that to us after all we've been through!"
Pelosi reportedly said, "We're not the ones trying to blow this up. It's the House Republicans."
Paulson replied, "I know, I know; it's both sides," according to a Treasury Department spokeswoman.
Dems, some in GOP question McCain's interventionQuote:
"John McCain did nothing to help," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who attended the meeting. "He only hurt the process."
Hours later, when negotiations hastily resumed in the Capitol, House Republicans refused to send a representative authorized to bargain.
"This is the president's own party," said Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, a chief Democratic negotiator. "I don't think a president has been repudiated so strongly by the congressional wing of his own party in a long time."
"We still don't know whether Sen. McCain works with them or not," he added.
Did we say $700b... actually it's more like $1.2 trillionQuote:
"The plan goes far but it doesn't go far enough in terms of recapitalization," he said. "The banking system and the investment banking system in total really requires about $500 billion more. Where that comes from is still up in the air."

Barney Frank: God save us from John McCain’s “help”Quote:
Senator McCain has said he had to interrupt his campaign and couldn’t do a debate because he had to come here to help us. God save us from such help. But in any case, there is no sign whatsoever that Senator McCain’s got any real role here, so he certainly ought to feel free to go back and debate.
