I believe Muslims are pretty good at giving alms. And, Teresa has been accused of using the bulk of her donations for missionary work, not helping the poor. And giving last rites to Hindus who are dying.

I don't question Mother Theresa's beliefs.

The disappointing thing to learn is how little of the money that went to her charity was actually used to help the poor. That could have been her doing but more likely it was the people who handled the money who were so parsimonious.

The sad fact of charities is that many of them (one could possibly say most of them) use the money more to grow the organization than to help the needy. That's particularly reprehensible (if the 7% figure is accurate) for a charity dedicated to the work of such a selfless woman. The people who donated have a right to be distraught that their money accomplished so little concrete good.

The only ones I wouldn't include in that are the ones who used donations to simply make themselves look good by associating themselves with a good cause.

When you have the luxury of hindsight and your subject can't defend themselves you're pretty much infalable.

If they feel this way they should drag their criticial useless asses over to India and show us how it should have been done.

I think the moral of the story - as with Lance Armstrong, and just about every other such iconoclastic revelation - is don't put people up on a pedestal as super-human heroes and then you won't have to react in such a visceral manner when you find out said 'hero' is just fallible human beings like the rest of us. That really is an old fashioned way of thinking.

A new study in the religious studies journal Religieuses, however, says that the late Mother Teresa's reputation is mostly hype — a result of a church declining in popularity trying to boost its image.
Mother Teresa's biggest supposed sin? According to the Times of India, it was "her dubious way of caring for the sick by glorifying their suffering instead of relieving it."
How did researchers reach this controversial conclusion? The team of Canadian researchers studied nearly 300 documents, and discovered reports of poor hygiene standards and a shortage of medicine, supplies, and care in Mother Teresa's 517 "homes for the dying" — although not for lack of cash. According to the report, her organization, the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, received hundreds of millions of dollars in donations.

Of course, this isn't news to fans of Christopher Hitchens, the erudite atheist who made it his mission to battle religious dogma before he died in 2011. He even wrote a book on the topic called, crudely enough, The Missionary Position:
Bear in mind that Mother Teresa’s global income is more than enough to outfit several first-class clinics in Bengal. The decision not to do so, and indeed to run instead a haphazard and cranky institution which would expose itself to litigation and protest were it run by any branch of the medical profession, is a deliberate one. The point is not the honest relief of suffering but the promulgation of a cult based on death and suffering and subjugation. [Salon]

All I know is that before Mother Teresa the Dalits were not even considered human. If you ran one over with your car there was far less consequence than if you'd run into one of their sacred cows.

After Mother Teresa there has been a Dalit as Prime Minister.

As to her religious commentaries? She was a devout Catholic and given that none of her comments raised any eyebrows in Rome then I guess that's what they believe. Not my cup of tea, for sure. But that does not change or lessen what she accomplished and any criticism of her from atheist activist Hitchens is to be expected even if the woman shat roses.

Perhaps we need more people who are not so willing to see the world as black and white and heroes and villains.

Let’s see, Mother Theresa set up a type of clinical care where there was none before and gets beat up for it’s "unsanitary" conditions. Mother Theresa supports the Catholic Churches views on Abortion, Birth Control and Divorce. For this she is called dogmatic.
She treated all humans as if they had worth in places where many were considered worthless.

Mother Theresa inspired millions to donate and take up the cause of the poor in some of the poorest areas of the world. Now years after her passing she and her methods are being questioned and ridiculed. I wonder where all these noble people are and why they are not doing better and or more then Mother Theresa did. Show her up in the one way that really counts by outdoing her in the realm of charity and compassion.
