Alright, in an attempt to bring a thread which can actually be considered a "game" to the Forum Games, it's the Science Puzzle Thread. I'll keep track of scores, maybe, in this post, so the stakes are pretty high.

I thought I had made a thread like this before, I remember it clearly, so if anyone can find it, they get an extra point.

If someone wants to post their own question after one is answered correctly, go for it. Try to stick to Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc... maybe math, if we're hard up.

Scores:
Zoraja: 2

Number one:

You're sitting in a canoe, which is floating in your pool in the backyard. You happen to find a particularly nice spot at one end of the pool, so you decide to drop anchor (it's a big canoe), and throw the big lead anchor overboard.

Part A (for one point): The anchor hits bottom (thunk) - what happens to the water level in the pool?

Part B (for another point): The anchor chain you attached was too short, so instead of hitting the bottom, it just hangs underwater (the boat luckily doesn't tip). Now what happens to the water level in the pool?

Good luck!

A Water level will increase depending on the size of the pool. Big pool, just a tiny bit, little pool, alot

B: water goes up more cause it will pull the boat further into the water displacing it.

Either way the water level stays the same, as presumably the water was already displaced when the anchor was in the canoe with you.

I'm not all right?

The weight of the anchor is in the canoe, so it shouldn't make any difference if it's thrown overboard or not. Also... the length of the chain shouldn't matter.

The level of the water would be lower because the iron in the anchor more dense than the water so when it is in the wter it is displacing less water than when it was in the boat because 100lbs of water takes up more space than 100lbs of iron because it is more dense. SO the water level would go down when you put the anchor in the water. In the boat it was displacing the equivilant weight of water, but in the water it is only displacing the amount of water that it is actually physically displacing.

Then when it did not hit bottom the water level would rise because now it is taking up both the physical space i nthe water as well as weighing the boat down which is displacing more water again.

The specific gravity of lead is more than water.

1st case the water level will fall, cos anchor in boat displaces an amount = to it's own weight.

2nd case the water level will rise cos the anchor displaces its own volume.

I think. :?

Isn't this like the elevator one... where it doesn't matter if you jump just before the plunging elevator hits bottom because you're going the same speed anyway?

Or something like that. ;)
