And the fact that you would discontinue showing a sign of respect, just because you want to make a statement to some people on the Internet also makes me wonder. I sincerely hope that you were just stating this to make a point, and haven't actually done so.
No, I really didn't wear any poppy. I can show respect in my own way, I don't need your silly traditions. I do think, however, that it should be demonstrated just because one says something on the internet doesn't mean it doesn't have impact.
A silly tradition?? Really?
Just look at this thread. What more do I need to say? I know for a fact that this is not the only place where I could find people talking in this manner. All I would have to do is wait for the local newspaper to write a similar article, and the letters would be pouring in for weeks.

Was your grandfather german? Did he fight for the nazis? I note you have a German flag gif on your profile and you didn't mention who your grandfather fought with and where.
No, my grandfather was a private in the Canadian army. The German flag is more of an intention than a current reality.
Ok mate, I wasn't casting aspersions on Germans, but I can see why people from non-Commonwealth cultures may not hold the poppy in the same view as those who fought with the Empire and remain in the Commonwealth.

Reading through this thread, I noticed one thing - the insults and name calling came from those advocating the wearing of the red poppy only. I find this a little disturbing, because at the same time they're talking about "respect" they're flinging out words such as asshole and cunt.
Most of those arguing against the white poppy didn't do themselves - or the vets - proud.
I don't know if I can get through this whole thread, but I got this far.
10 points for lily.

Hardly. Used to? You still sound like that. I think he's taking the piss.

I don't really care whose tradition it is. I can remember history in whichever way I choose, so long as it doesn't harm anyone else. That is my right, and that is what the soldiers of the second world war fought for.

And for the uneducated, the above is the definition of liberty. You know, that thing that every war strives to achieve as its outcome.

I certainly wouldn't look to this thread for advice on how to pay proper respect for the fallen. It's the people who have put their life on the line for this country, who see the red poppy as the one and only proper form of respect. Anything other than that in my opinion is just lip service to the day of Remembrance.

Nothing, but that's the most obvious reaction.
More like the least reasonable reaction. Given conversations like this one, it still unfortunately makes me think of how correct Gandhi was when he said that western civilisation would be a good idea.
If someone grabs your balls and twists you aren't going to drill them one?

He's a future cop.
I'm a hopeful future ERT RCMP.
Sounds groovy. What's an ERT?
Emergency Response Team. Canada's answer to SWAT.
Sounds intense.
You gotta keep your cool under a lot of stress.
This could be difficult if he has uncontrollable reflexes that make him punch people in the face.
Actually I am damn good under stress.

Blame Germany.

Do you think the women's libbers would be justified in attacking a guy who wore such a shirt, Bart?
Frankly, yes.
The jackass went there looking to provoke a confrontation and such an action in the United States would fall under the legal definition of "fighting words".
Under the law in most states if someone deliberately provokes someone else to attack them then the attacker is not liable for their proportionate response to the provocation.
Wearing a provocative tee-shirt to a women's lib demonstration would be a deliberate act of provocation and if you did get beaten you could also be charged with inciting a riot, disturbing the peace, and in some jurisdictions you may also be up on civil rights charges for interfering with the free speech of the protestors if they had the proper permits for the protest.
So does that mean that a bar full of bikers is innocent in raping a girl who walks in wearing sexually provocative clothes?
No, the laws cover FIGHTING WORDS. If she went in to the bar calling them all names they could conceivably get away with giving her a smack. But rape? No way is that covered under fighting words.

Yeah, I think I was called a coward for being a liberal one too many times and decided to push back a bit. Plus there was that Charles Adler thread (Evolution of Conservatives and Liberals). That got my dander up for some reason. Who's that pencil-necked geek to cast aspersions at my masculinity?--the guy's a fucking featherweight. It's pointless though--it just degenerates into posts like the last few. Thanks for the wake-up call, Bart.
Perhaps it was just the stress of taking the global warming sceptic position.
And you are most welcome, my good friend.

You've been here a few weeks. I've been here near to three years.
If you think anything I've posted since you've been here is as bad as what I used to post way back when then you need to go do some reasearch.
Also, I consider Zipperfish as the person who most influenced my moderating my tone and calming down. While he and I may butt heads from time to time, I consider him to be a mentor to me of sorts for encouraging me, by his example, to calm down.

I'll admit, it's better, but you still have a long way to go.
