I am a native Californian, who by some cruel twist of fate, has fallen deeply in love with a native Canadian whose family lives in Winnipeg. In a couple short months we'll be moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba to get married and live in Canada. I am outgoing female, personable, have tattoos, I like parties and I know that neither of us are the stay-at-home type, and we're both in our early 20's (I'm 21, he's 24) and we pretty much stick out like sore thumbs in any conservative setting. But our only chance at starting a life together is to go to Winnipeg, although, with all the crap I hear about Winnipeg it's starting to sound like I won't be able to handle the change. I'm a strong beleiver that crappy situations bring people together, I don't care about the crime and weather, and all the other complaints about winnipeg so much as I'm worried about not meeting cool people. We won't be there forever, just long enough to save money and find a real place to live, but is Winnipeg really that bad, will I be able to hang-out at coffee shops and make fun of angsty teenagers, find someone else that loves kitchy bands from the 60's like the Kinks, get a tattoo that doesn't involve various cartoon characters "doing-it" or a lame tribal design, can I still start a crumby garage band, go to house-parties that involve activities a little less mind-numbing than cow-tipping? Am I moving to Canada's equivilent of the U.S.'s midwest with a combination of homemakers that enjoy scrapbooking and kids that think huffing glue is awesome?

I've lived in Manitoba for 5 years.

Bad. Idea.

Loser-peg Sucks. Do you like snow? No, think, way mreo then that. You know how some Americans think of snow in the north? Think more then that. Way more. Now in the summer, nice place, except that Winnipeg is the Misquito Capital of the world. Enjoy being literally eaten alive. Enjoy the West Nile.

Now think of -40 temperatures. Celcius. (techniclaly it doesn't matter at -40, same F and C)

I agree with ziggy. Run man.

Cold as Siberia in the Winter.

Persoanlly, I favour BC.

Best part about winnipeg this year was flying out of it. Think I was the only white guy at the airport when I first arrived, looked like winnipegistan. It only gets worse for bugs the farther north you go but....to each his own, there is some nice country and people there.

Lived in Winterpeg for over 20 years... grew up there. Was a nice place to grow up in, but the city has changed quite a bit over the years. In the interest of being fair, I'll give you the positives and negatives:

Positives: Great acccess to fishing in Ontario (Kenora) where at Lake of the Woods you have the best Walleye fighing in North America.
Good music scene... lots of bars with live music, especially heavier stuff which I like.

Negatives: Extreme weather - Freezing cold in the winter, and blistering hot in the summer. Bad skeeters - brutal. Terrible downtown area... lots of bums and gangs. Older city with few newer areas if you are looking for a nice newer house. The planners of the city have choked off newer development. If you plan to buy, look in the south end... no North end, whatever you do. If you are younger and trendier, you might like the Osbourne village area... I think the people that live there are freaks for the most part though.

I moved out ot Calgary a few years ago... this is the place to be in Canada. The economy is rockin, and you can make a fortune here if you are smart and get involved in Oil and Gas at some level. Whatever you do... don't live in this city (Winnipeg) too long, or you'll end up growing old and poor and wishing you took the risk, and moved into a city more conducive to making lots of money and having fun... like Calgary.

Well, I myself didn't judge the city on race and skin colour....

But you are right. Not only in Winnipeg, all of south Manitoba. Not many white people

I say go there give it a try with an open mind. Everyone has an opinion, they're like assholes. Only you will know if you like it or not.

It's a simple freaking question. :x

And if you were a Liberal in this town, you'd notice it too. This town humps Calgree. And the wannabe rednecks are everywhere. God damn cowboy hats......

I'm just wondering how, if this town basically wants to be Calgree so fucking much, and is like, NeoConservative (seriously), I wonder how Calgree is in political view points?

I've been to Winnipeg once. I got a speeding ticket on the perimeter for going 12 over the limit, then got lost on the perimeter, then got stuck in a snow storm the next day trying to leave Winnipeg. 10 hours to get to Brandon? C'mon! Tell him he has to stay in Cali!
