Several Saskatchewan rural municipalities want to introduce a $.50 to $1.00 acre levy on land to fund an ethanol plant. The last thing I need is a levy on land, mill rates are too high as it is, the school board wants more money, and the RMs are falling behind in thier primary obligation to maintain the field access, farm access and even grid road systems :x . Can the RMs be this out of it? 8O

I think the RMs should fix the roads and not try to create jobs for people who are not here.

On another thread I see you have pothole's.

Ethanol is good and the government has said it's got to be 5% in fuel in 5 years or something. Go with the flow, grow an ethanol friendly crop and gear your next years crops for ethanol production.
Be pro-active,anything that could be put into ethanol production will be a cash crop every year, not like wheat. :?

Fuck the wheat board, grow and sell for ethanol, put the family farm back in the green for a change.

Anyone who go's big in ethanol production and farming ethanol friendly crops will make nothing but money the next few years. I would go for the tax if it would benefit you.

The way to put a farm int he green is to cut costs hard to do with taxes going up.

And I'm not saying ethanol is a bad venture, but what give the right for the RM to invest peoples money for them. If I want an ethanol plant I'd invest in or build an ethanol plant.

You dont have to build a plant, just grow the crop. Up to you if you want to make some money as even a bad crop is good for ethanol,at least you would have a steady yearly income.

But,stick with the old farmer ways and be held hostage by mother nature.
Depends on if you can change after growing the same crop year after year,or if your willing to plant something that would work in ethanol.

Even if your crop is toast because of too much or less moisture you will still be able to sell it for ethanol. Lots of farms in Alberta are gearing up for that right now. Dont say I didnt tell you about this.

That's the bottom line. What the hell is the RM doing getting into the investment business? The RM should be lowering taxes, not raising them. Government has no business in business!

His point is the government has decided to build a plant... with his money. It should be a private venture, if somebody wants Knoss to invest, they should show up at his farm with lots of pamphlets and projections and ask for his money. As opposed to the government taking it.

Oh?

What are they growing in AB for ethanol production?

Anything, corn is one and lots of farmers couldnt even get in their fields last year because of the rains,so the corn go's for ethanol. Any plant matter will do.
ethanol study's

I agree the govt should let private enterprise go the route. The cons would.

Eggzaktly.

Not enough rain out west for that stuff.

not so much that as corn dosen't mature in set amount of time. Wheat requiers about 120 days without freezing to mature. corn on the other hand grows faster the more heat and sunlight there is so in say Peace Riever where the days are long and hot corn can be grown in say 75 days as opposed to Texas where the days in JUuly and August are shorter and coller but it never freezes and corn can grow for 200 days. In southern Sask there isn't enough sunlight for it to grom in 135 days.

Alright, not enogh heat or rain.

Doesn't corn like 20 or so inches of rain? It grows great in KY... lots more rain here.

It doesn't grow in SW SK, threrefor I'm no expert on the stuff. But I do know it doesn't grow in SW SK. :)

That's why I was wondering what AB is growing for ethanol production...

Last year working in central Alberta I filled my cooler with corn right from the fields every day and Taber Alberta(southern) has corn that's on par with Creston corn or better, hell of a corn fest there every year. And I didnt see any irrigation there either. At any rate it doesnt have to be corn, anything that grows can be used.Grain is another favourite.

Last fall it was too much rain for most but taber, the central Alberta fields sat out for so long because of the moisture that it was downgraded to feed corn and then when still too wet they let the cows in.All of it could of went for ethanol.
The hutterites here will be the first to start growing ethanol friendly crops, their cheap bastards and know where the money is. There was a documentary on the future of ethanol a few weeks ago, this is still new stuff,as the price of fuel rises(and it will) it might be something to look into if your a farmer.
