MONTREAL — A broken water main sent water cascading down McTavish St., literally sweeping pedestrians off their feet, and flooded several buildings on the McGill campus Monday afternoon.
Workers were conducting repairs at a water main at the intersection of Pine and Dr. Penfield Aves. when a 48-inch pipe "gave way," Montreal Mayor Michael Applebaum told reporters Monday evening at a news conference about the flood. He said emergency crews are busy trying to get the flooding under control, and that the flow of water should be shut off completely by 8 p.m.
University authorities warned students and staff to move computers and documents out of harm's way and to get themselves to safety.
"The University is trying to assess damage as best it can, but it will be extensive," McGill said in a statement on the university website.
