No it is a party in ruin because they let the camel in the tent. The new American century nonsense that hijacked the GOP also made it possible for the tea party to make inroads and have taken the party hostage from within. Now the party is virtually ungovernable and there is no way to strike up a bargain with them. It is an all or nothing gambit with them and this game of chicken they are playing is going to ruin us all.
An interesting point of view I've read some days ago says that it may be the beginning of a change of the biparty political system of the US. That the two Old Establishment Parties are getting so disconnected that they will crumble and new ones will surface: a real Tea Party 'Party' and a real Social-Democrat Party. Those parties would be more about ideas than politics like the Dems and the GOP.
I think it may be a time for the corrosion of the two party system. You have a society that seems to be in perpetual crisis and two traditional parties that seem unable to provide effective leadership to deal with the problems. This is fertile soil for the Tea Party or any other group that can provide a believable alternative. You need go no further than the Republican hopefuls for the Presidential nomination to see there is a serious problem here.
