So, recent events got me thinking about our rights and how we percieve them.

If people want to peacefully camp out for days for the new iPhone to go on sale, no one worries about it.

If people want to peacefully camp out for days to bring attention to the inequalities they see in society, that somehow requires a police presence and statements from Police as to their intentions?

Quote:
Police will maintain a presence at the Vancouver Art Gallery today as the local offshoot of the global Occupy movement enters its third day.

Const. Jana McGuinness of the Vancouver police department said on Sunday the force did not yet know whether the Occupy Vancouver protest would affect today's rush-hour commute.

Why the difference if the subject of the peaceful gathering may have a political motivation rather than commercial?

200 people in each article, yet one needs a police presence. Hmmmmm.

Given the apparent nature of crowd behaviour in Vancouver it's prudent for the police to err on the side of caution.

I totally agree. Those Iphone buyers have not been known to smash their way into the store to get them for free.

The cops should be behaving just as they are in this instance - ready for trouble, but not starting it. That's what went wrong with the riot - they weren't ready for trouble.

Plus, those Iphone buyers are good for business. Those hippy, commie, welfare bum, sheep protesters don't bring in a dime.

LMAO ^^

Agreed, but none the less they have a right to peacefully gather without being provoked or in Wall St.'s case, abused without provocation.

The Occupy NS protesters here, "Occupied" the two Cenotaph's. One is for the World Wars & Korea and the other for Fallen Peace Officer's just erected last year in 2010. They marked all over the Peace Officer's monument and slightly marked up the Cenotaph.

I was pissed off (rightfully so) and staring daggers at them, I was with my girlfriend so I didn't say much I just picked the garbage off the War Cenotaph took lots of pictures and posted them on facebook so people can see the other side of this otherwise perfectly benign movement.

Nice way to show respect.

That's why those hippy commie sheep bum protesters should get the cops.

That's kind of my observation right there.

Hundreds of cities - peaceful protests. One city, some asses deface a centoaph. But to some that reflects on the many thousands of people who did nothing wrong, not the one or two people writing on the cenotaph.

I seem to recall an discussion a while ago between you and I about why peaceful protesters should not be 'sentenced' to clean up the Oceanic garbage gyres for excercising their right to freely and peacefully assemble. :P

It only takes one or two assholes to ruin it for the rest, I really tried to flex my tolerance and understand that likely only a few assholes marked up the monuments. It piss rained today so likely all the chalk is gone.

London as well. The bad apples have ruined it for the good ones.
