Rented this on the weekend and was more than disapointed. It was one big self serving monolog by Douglas Coupland. I'd never heard of the man before and his constant self reference ensure that I will always avoid him in the future.
Here's the lines that suckered me in:
Quote:
Come join Douglas Coupland, one of our greatest national voices, on a hilarious, cinematic joyride.
SOUVENIR OF CANADA joins internationally celebrated author Douglas Coupland (Generation X, jPod) on a journey to find out what makes Canadians, Canadians. Coupland seeks out the answers in the darnedest of places: like stubby beer bottles, Ookpiks, bilingual cereal boxes and Terry’s Fox’s worn-out sock. His dream is to build a “Canada House” to house all these unique pop objects and memories, that only Canadians will understand.
Rife with humour, nostalgia and insight, SOUVENIR OF CANADA is the movie event that has critics raving and audiences buzzing.
Nope. It's not funny, quirky or even entertaining. He tells us all about his family and they sound far more interesting and "Canadian" than he is. He beggs a house, sprays it all white and fills it with Canadiana junk.
"Ooo look, big lamps made from net floats"
"Ooo look, electric powerline towers made from hockey sticks"
It just goes on and on, but always circling around Douglas Coupland.
If anybody wants to see where you're CBC tax money goes too, this is it.
