If you saw it coming then either you were naive and made the promise anyway, or you made the promise anyway and lied.

I think that the chain of command said "Here is what you can promise" and gave them orders. They believed what they were telling the Afghans was backed up through the chain of command to the government.

Now we got front line folks who have to answer to the interpreters about the promises they made on our behalf, which to me is not right because then the honour of our troops is in question. And it feels like shit to promise something then have to go back and say "oops, looks like I can't deliver". That is not what our guys should be forced to do.

He's saying the terps are neither dumb nor naive, and most probably saw this coming. He's saying the troops had nothing to do with it. In my experience with the terps, they were actually quite intelligent people (they learned a second language fluently, many 3rd and 4th languages), and most were quite concerned about making it to Canada with their families in one piece once their contracts were up.

Cleared up. But its still not right. And its not a left or right thing cause we had a minority government and everyone had a shot to make this right years ago.

No, it's not a left or right thing, it's not even a government in power thing, it's a bureaucracy thing. Shit happens, sadly. :(

You do realize the interpreters make a lot of money. They dont walk down the street, find some dude who speaks a few languages then pays them a donkey and some goats for their trouble. I knew one guy who used his money to pay for an apartment for himself and his family back in Dubai.

I was pretty ticked off ready this thread until this post, if nothing they atleast get compensated decently, although getting tickets, getting visas and aparment here really does not cost much at all mowadays. Just to put in into perspective, you could do all that or buy a decent ride.

And to put into even more into perspective the apartment that I live in now and its in new gated development and all, stones thrown from all the famous Dubai Icons, Burj Khalifa, The Palm Island, Burj al Arab, you could buy that or a base model 2011 Range Rover ! lol !

Those "rewards" are adequate compensation for them and their families to spend the rest of their lives in fear - those whose lives will not be cut short?

Let's lay the blame where it belongs, shall we. If Mr. Harper said make it happen it would be half finished no later than the end of the month.
