nust for something to do I was cLecking out the rental situation in Ft. McMurray. Holy shit is aHl I can say. $1500 for a 1bedroom basement suite! There was a two bedroom for $2500. What the hell is wrong with this place. How can a person expect to get ahead when greedy assholes charge that much. That put me off of ever looking there for a job. Now I know about supply and demand but it just seems stupid that places like this are desperate for labour but the locals jack up the rent like that. You'd think that the local government or even provincial would act to make it more attractive. But I guess as long as people are going there and paying the price, then the price will stay high.

I don't know about Fort St John, but I was looking in the Grand Prairie AB area as well and it's almost as bad. I guess the north isn't used to so many jobs in such a short time and they don't have the neccesary accomodations but someone better do something or it's going to slow things down.

Yeah, we were considering moving to Alberta, but I was worried about rent costs. I guess if you're makin the money that they're offering out there, it shouldn't be a problem, but then again, you'd just end up with the same amount of money left over as you would in BC after paying bills and rent, so what would be the point?

I guess the only solution would be to buy a house....although not everyone can do that

That's exactly what I was thinking, Edmonton still has some cheaper rent though, and lot's of good jobs. And the housing is relatively affordable.

I know exactly what you mean, I spent a few years in Edmonton but moved back because I missed BC. But now I'm thinking of going back, the money is calling me. Not to mention the opportunity to get into just about anything you've ever wanted to do. They're looking for everybody and anybody there.

Medicine Hat has a lot of oil patch type jobs that are booming right now. If you don't mind the smaller centers. I would secure work before moving though, as I think a factory was just purchased and moved out of town leaving more than a few unemployed factory workers. Don't know if that is enough of a bump to upset the job market there or not.

I'm contemplating a move to Penticton myself, but they don't seem to want to pay me all that much considering the real estate prices I've been finding online.

Yes it is, I want to get out because I will never be able to own a house here. I got lucky though and only pay 465 for my apartment.

Ya I got really lucky, the landlord likes me, other 1 bedrooms in my building are being rented for 565 so I'm just waiting for my rent increase notice. PDT_Armataz_01_03

I wanna get my hands on a piece of land and build my own house. I currently pay 500/month American bucks and that is the cheapest apartment complex in this town, so you are doing pretty good.

I'm livin' in the hood. Last summer a couple guys were shot across the street, and somebody was systematicly smashing into vehicles and stealing whatever, but was caught two vehicles before they got to my truck here lately.

Well this place is shady as well, but the worst we've had is someone looting open vehicles and stealing license plates. Oh and some inconsiderate a-hole put a dent in my car. :?
