It's text messaging gone fractal. The utility of text messaging is the basis of twitter and that has purpose. Twitter simply has evolved that idea of the original premise.
If you don't understand the importance of rapid text then ideas like facebook or twitter, which are based on that idea of a social media, should not make sense to you.

I don't personally see the need for Twitter. Who would be interested in what I do? I am not important. I can understand celebs or people with jobs who need to reach a lot of people at a time find it useful. I am not interested in celebs, so I don't follow them. Conclusion: Twitter is not for me

I still use a pen and paper, gives me time to consider what is actually being written....or is it that I am to lazy to learn to speed type.

People obviously find some value on Twitter, the traffic for my new http://politwitter.ca/ has been steadily increasing since I started it in May, and there are now more than 80 MPs using Twitter.
I just started another new Canadian Twitter site, its kinda pre-beta right now, still much work too do. Its basically Canadian News Media & journalists on Twitter http://newstweets.ca/
I do follow a bunch of people personally on Twitter though, but most my friends post updates on Facebook and the ones that do use Twitter have it linked to their Facebook feed anyways.
I defiantly don't think Twitter sucks though, and I think it has its value.
