Betch'a it's costing BP a FUCK of a lot more to try and fix this than it would have cost them to just have that $500,000 part installed in the first place.

This really should be a cautionary tale about cutting costs and corners just to increase one's bottom line.

But that wasnt up to BP, but up to the owner of the rig... BP just rented it and now get the blame...

Guess they should have gotten to know more about who they were sleeping with then. My heart weeps for BP, weeps 35 million gallons of oil. They were the ones paying for run the operation they should have made sure it was safe.

You know, when you have a tenant who runs a grow-op in your house, who is responsible for the clean up? Methinks the owner of the house. The tenant will go to jail for possession of pot, but the owner is responsible, right?
When a tree falls on your house, are you as owner responsible for the fix, or the tenant?

I'm not saying the BP is not to blame at all, I just dont think its fair they get ALL the blame...

Well your comparison is not really fitting, its not like renting a house and even if it was I would say that while the owner is on the hook for clean up of a grow op that does not mean they should be the tenants should be as they ran the grow op. I'm really not sure what's involved in "renting" a oil platform. Does BP just rent the rig and supply the labour or does the rig supply the labour and BP gets that as part of the rent? either way BP should have been running regular safety audits just like a landlord should check up to make sure his tenants are not trashing his house and tentant needs to keep on landlord to maintain their rental.

Sure I think whoever was renting it out has some fault, so does the government as like I said in another thread, these things should never be allowed to operate if the only contingency to stop a leak has to be devised once it happens. All parties weighed the risk and all lost the bet. In the end society will weep and complain but will allow it to happen because they want to keep using oil and because of that they will be the ones paying the bill, BP will just pass the cost on to the consumer in some way.
