What next?? Dump the scarlet tunics?????

METEGHAN, N.S. -- On a Friday night this June, Const. Jason Tree and Const. David Connors will don their scarlet dress uniforms, stand before family, friends and co-workers, and wed in what will apparently be the first same-sex marriage in RCMP history.

In an interview in their Meteghan home yesterday, the men said they've had great support from the national police force, the community and their families.

"I've never had a single problem," said Tree, 27, a native of Fredericton who has worked in southwestern Nova Scotia for six years and is posted in Meteghan.

The pair, who've dated since their days at the University of New Brunswick more than eight years ago, will be married by a justice of the peace at the Rodd Grand Hotel in Yarmouth, N.S., on June 30.

Each will write their own vows, and each will have a best man.

They expect plenty of fellow officers to attend, but have yet to decide if they'll have their colleagues form an honour guard for them.

They plan to honeymoon in France and England.

Provincial RCMP spokesman Sgt. Frank Skidmore said the force was happy to hear about the union, adding that they're proud RCMP officers reflect all aspects of the community.

"This is a first for us," Skidmore said yesterday.

"Certainly, the RCMP welcomes a workforce that is representative of Canadian society, and that is the case here."

Connors, 28, who grew up in Nackawic, N.B., and Tree had met before university because their high school clubs met with one another occasionally.

However, once they got to university, they discovered their mutual attraction.

"He kind of stood out from the rest," Connors said.

Do they get to pat down men? This could bring up unusual law suits.

And before Avro jumps in, Shut it.

I know I am goign to get shot down by some idiotic comment on this but really, if your being professional they should be allowed to. Its not like they are going to be required to use the womens bathroom, or womens fitting room in shops.

Hrmm, can't have it both ways. I think they will have to call in ordinary people to do the deed.

Why wouldn't you just expect them to be professional about it. I think people are rediculous, I dont care if its a male or female who pats me down at the airport. If either of them does anything I will react the same. I think you just have to assume they are going to do their jobs as they should.

I think its more people's homophobia that is the problem not the actual probability that they will do somethign inappropriate.

I agree with that old devils advocate, hwacker.
It's a good question but I fear that no one will officially ask it.

There it is: homophobia. The public club that beats people intio silence.

Yeah ok. That’s why females have female guards and officers to take care of business. This is just a pat down away from a law suit.

Some smart lawyer will have a field day with this.

Its true.

I just wish there were not so many stupid people out there.

There really is no need to have separate bathrooms and such if everybody could be just a little more mature. And yeah, I realize thats not likely to ever happen.

either or..neither nor is he the best man for the job at hand...if not I guess you have to turn to the next best man who may very well be less than best but may have to be the better man.... but if the best man was the better man in all this could we call him a good man.
