Yogi wish I could find a link to an article in our local paper last week. It was written by one of the paper's writers who's from there. This guy apparently spent quite a bit of time in the hospital as a kid, so much so he couldn't remember what year it was or how old he was when he met Messier. To make a long story short he told of Messier and his visits to the hospital to see the kids. Him, all alone with no PR guys and cameras. He would just drop by the hospital and hang with the kids for hours, watching TV or playing video games. Whatever he did there business wise meant nothing to these kids.......but they are fans for life. This guys only regret is that he can't remember how old he was when he first met him.
Commendable for sure! But if this were the only criteria for getting a public 'utility' named after onesself then shouldn't there already be a 'GeorgeLaroque International Airport' or a Henry 'Gizmo' Williams Freeway?
The point I am trying to make is that 'celebrity worship' has gone too far> Mark Messier Made a lot of money in Edmonton as did Wayne Gretzky. Neither could claim to have done a damn thing for the betterment of Edmonton for many years, if at all!
If any city council anywhere really feels the need to name or re-name a public utility, then why not after someone who really is a contributor to the community? What about those who have made a career of putting others first? Every community has several of these individuals in their midst and yet the truly inane get the recognition!
