While this isn't limited to chinese society, it is more prevalent than in many others. i've witnessed several times where someone has been mowed down, either by a car or a scooter, and everyone else drives around the victim. I've also witnessed rescuers getting run over while trying to help the victim. A couple years ago, I was in a multi-vehicle accident where a young girl was also killed.

Often the Chinese will not get involved in an accident because they can be held responsible for the injured person. A friend who has lived here since the mid 70s put it best. The Chinese are better to friends than Westerners are and worse to strangers. i don't put up with their silly shit in traffic I kick, punch and knock people off of scooters who endanger me or mine. I've also taken out a few windshields on cars with my helmet. The Chinese are only brave in crowds of ten or more when facing a couple of foreigners, so most of them take their lesson with only a glare or two...but i'm not sure lesson is the correct term, as they seem incapable of learning from their mistakes and the consequences of said mistake.
