The main difference I see in the two rallies has to do more with subject matter. Beck's Rally to Restore Honor etc. was aimed at promoting a cultural shift toward more traditional values, and carried some religious undertones. The Rally to Restore Sanity was focused on attitudes towards political discourse. I don't really see the rallies as being in conflict. They certainly drew different crowds, but they don't have incompatible goals.

That's a good point. If I can get over my bias of Beck/baggers for a bit, then yep, if they could talk to each other it would be good. I wouldn't include Beck himself tho, he seems way too far gone. And the teabaggers with their "keep your govt hands off my medicare" and all certainly seem interested in political discourse as well.

Actually Stewart's rally had a religious element with Father Sarducci's invoking God to give a sign about which religion is the right one. I think he settled on Buddhism, because nothing was an apt sign for it.

For a murderous pig farmer, you're A-OK in my books.

It was satire to a point to rebuff the sheer arrogance of Beck having a rally on MLK day. Once they were there and the dwarfed the Beck rally 1000 fold Jon made a speech on par with his post 9/11 one that was heartfelt and sincere.

To say that Jon is a political activist and that he is a movement himself is seeing it backwards. He is a landmark reference point on the political landscape. He hasn't changed that much at all but the insanity from the 24 hour news cycle and the rise of the pundit class from Sunday talk shows to hourly events has ramped up a great deal over the years.

Right on. For satire, the event was weak. Just because Jon does good satire on his show does't mean he's always good. But if you see that speech as satire, then I'd like to know what you think sincerity looks like? (Not talking to you here, Scape.) In the age of irony and rage it seems nobody can see anything but either of those two. Well and ironic rage of course.

Since I posted the ReasonTV take on the Restoring Honor Rally, it seems appropriate I do the same for this one.

For a rally to restore sanity, there sure are a lot of interesting costumes. :)

Great questions, funny answers. Great total debunking of the idea of 'moderates' at the march.

We all know that the crowd was a bunch of mediocre leftists. Unlike Jon, they won't
shove radical leftist groups into the same ship as the Right-Wingers just to seem
moderate.

Wish I'd been there. Would have been fun.

Missed the live coverage, had 'shit to do'.
