It appears after last year's abnormal amount of snow fall, a few people around here are trying to cut down on their shoveling this year by installing snow fence in their yards. This is so simple but from what I've seen it needs to be a home handyman tip.

There's a right way and a wrong way when it comes to putting up snow fence and it seems every yard I've seen so far, is doing it wrong and it's going to increase the shoveling. So if there's anyone here that has as much time to burn as I do, play my snow fence game. :P

Here's a illustration of a yard, the predominate winds comes from the NW. Simply state which 2 letters you would use (example A - E) to indicate where you'd put your snow fence in this yard.

There's only one rule, (a bylaw actually) you can't install snow fence that will cause snow to block a street or roadway.

I'll check back in a couple of days to see if anyone here needs the home handyman tip.

I'm sure this seems pretty stupid but it would only take one good blizzard and you'd wish that you knew the right way to put up a snow fence.

If your using a porous snow fence, some stolen orange mesh or something,
and you want the snow to accumulate behind the fence, but not the driveway.....

I'd agree with Martin. B -> D or B-> E.

E might be better because of the wind direction.

I put a snow fence this year and doubled it with burlap. Not for snow though, just to prevent my Cedars from getting sunburned this winter. :P

B - E

Faces the direction of wind but does not threaten to spill over into the lane as B - D does.

B-F

If the snow fence is perpendicular to the direction of wind, it'll jut eventually blow over the top. You want to use the fence t deflect the wind and additional snow away from the driveway. The only way to ensure that the snow doesn't hit the driveway is to have the fence block off as close to the corner of the house as is possible. This would keep wind vortices from kicking up snow around the corner of the house and onto the driveway. It also allows for some overlap past the corner to prevent snow from "sneaking around" the fence so to speak.

That's my theory, anyways.

That's backwards though. The snow fence works by creating a low pressure zone on the back side of it, so the snow is left in the low pressure zone.

The house itself will create low pressure at the driveway by C because of the wind direction, so the snow needs to be removed from the air before it gets there. Any solution involving C or F will just dump extra snow on the driveway.

This has to be the worst connect the dots I've ever seen. I’ve connected all the letters and all I get is a big "Z". The last connect the dots I did turned out to be a teddy bear so by comparison this is one really sucks. XD j'king

I would say b to e or just move to Califoria where you don't have to worry about it.
