Street names are decided on by the developer of the subdivision usually at a whim. Names may be vanity or some other dumb idea. I almost had a street named after me when I worked for a builder but the name was too close to another street across the mountain.

Abbotsford has screwed up street names as well. The subdivision in which i live has four streets names Sunnyside and another four named Springhill. Guess how many people get lost in this area?

There is also a road, Old Yale Road, that is split into three non-continous sections which transverses Abby. Meanwhile, there is another similar road that is contiguous, yet it has three differently name sections.

Try navigating in Winnipeg. Edmonton used to have almost entirely numbered streets until Millwoods was developed in the 70s. Now it's 'kitschy' to name streets so it's getting harder and harder to find your way around...dammit, why wreck something that works?

Try a Chinese city. There are different romanizations of Chinese words, so from one block to another the spellings change. Dashun becomes Tashun which becomesDashung, which is a completely different street from Tashung. Jioru becomes Chiuru, Ching Nyan changes to Chin Nien. Chung Shan changes to Jong san. Hoping becomes Hu ping. There is no standardization in English spelling, so driving is sometimes a major pain. Even city spellings change. Kaoshiung is sometimes spelled Gao Xiung. Taipei is Taibei, Taichung is Taijong etc. etc.

Yeah but was that Blackthorn Drive, Cresent, Place, Gate, Way, Lane, Court or Path...err...just keep your eyes open for his car.... :?

Anyways, subdivisions, with their really loopy roads that seem to lead back to where you entered, are designed that way so it's harder for people to speed or use the roads as short cuts across town.

It's 4-way stop heaven....

there is no problem with it in China (Mainland), cause they normally use official pinyin (transcription), neihter i noticed anything disturbing in HK, cause they use pinyin of Yue (cantonese). And of cause there are characters on the signs to avoid misleading
the only thing i cannot get is why the heck all the sinologists can't use the same pinyin in their f**king books, why do they invent something of their own in France, GB, USA ...? ok! i can even handle different systems for different languages but they think they are so exclusive that they can invent their personal transcription each time! f**k them, eggheads!

sorry! that was a cri de coeur

All the street names in Eastern Ontario start or end with 'Chemin' or 'Rue".

Oh for the logic of Toronto, Mission and Calgary. . . .

Towns like Oakville are re-introducing round abouts. Third Line has a large one with a seniors center on the inside. Ancaster has a couple now along Fiddler's Green too. Coming soon to suburbia near you!
