I would think that having a ringtone that doesn't disturb the teachers train of thought while teaching would be a good thing. How is this disrespect?

How? Do you like to watch a movie while kids in the front row call each other on their cell? Have you ever given a speech to an audience where they lower their head, their two thumbs on the cell to send a message?
No to your question, but something similar. I had a student that would bob his head yes or no to agree or disagree with my teachings. When he bobbed no, I would review my lesson plan to make sure I didn't miss anything. After a day of this, I had took him aside, because he was not learning, he was agreing (or not) with the material taught. His angle was that he used to fix this airplane 10 years ago and he had nothing to learn. We had a chat and it was the last time he bob his head in class.
To answer your question, I teach in a military environment, SO if a student would dare to touch his phone in my class, I would fry his ass.
