It's basically having ethical and moral standards, which you determine by your own reasoning, with emphasis on human values (as opposed to those who think trees and rocks are just as important as people).
Humanism is a broad category of active ethical philosophies that affirm the dignity and worth of all people, based on our ability to determine what is right using the qualities innate to humanity, particularly rationality.

Sure, it's a religion that rejects the idea of God and reviles people of faith, but it still bears all the attributes of a religion. Funny you should say that, wasn't it a liberal who had the freedom of religion protected by entrenching it in the charter?

Before Ronald-finaly-dead-Reagan, the US Religious community was mostly left wing. The Republicans and Reagan we're very effective in painting all Liberals as Communists and Liberal thinking as ''Supporting'' the USSR. Pinko Commies. Worked wonders... Anyways, slightly painted off in Canada too.
As for your argument in itself, it doesnt hold. Atheist fail to have a common view on anything. Athiest doesnt mean Liberal. Most Canadian Conservatives are Atheists. I'd even say theirs as much Liberal Atheists as Conservative Atheist. In Canada at least.

Yeah you are more talking about atheism. I'm a classical liberal and voted conservative and thus i'm considered right wing from my friends But i don't believe in God.
And this is why reducing things to simplistic generalisations never works. There are atheists who vote Conservative and Christians who vote Liberal, or NDP.

Yup, if I could have voted I would have voted con, and I am an atheist. I don't think it is as black and white in Canada.

It is hard to generalise one group on religion nowadays. While I do think the stuff that the liberals did about religion is rediculous (the stuff mention in Bart's posts) there are way too many varying opinions on the matter to group them together.

Another forum I used to visit had the farthest right winger you will ever see. What ever any Republican ever did, he always came back saying he supported it. Bush could kill this guys family and he would still love him. He called liberalism a disease
