You know what blows? If you are on EI you can get funding for training. If you are on welfare you can get funding for training. Anywhere in between it get's a lot more difficult. Of course there are student loans but if your interested in something that's under a certain amount of time in length they don't qualify. The banks have student lines of credit but you have to have a job or a cosigner to get one. Is there anything available for the average Joe?
I thought about taking class one training. I've thought about it a few years ago, and now that I'm unemployed I'm thinking about it again. There's a company in PG that trains you for about 3k which isn't too bad, if you have 3k. Which I don't, and because it's a short program it doesn't qualify for student loans. There's a company in southern BC that has a loan qualifying program but it's 3 months long and costs 9k and I'd have to move to Castlegar. I can't get EI, and I won't go to welfare. I'm in the frickin middle and it sucks. Does anyone know of any other programs out there?

Since there seems to be such a shortage of class 1 drivers, especially here in the north, I've heard that some companies are hiring people without a class 1 and sponsoring their training. You have to agree to stay a year after you get your class 1 or you have to pay them back. I know some of the nitrogen companies in the patch are doing that.

When I was on EI they paid for me to go for P.I.T.S. training, thats every ticket you need to work in the patch and then some,2 weeks of courses.Enough to work anywhere in Alberta and the patch and chances are they would offer you a safety guy job if after completion of the course they like what they see.
That was global training, think their affiliated with United safety also. Last I looked they were still looking for people.

Ya I've been looking into that as well. Trimac has that program with the school in Castlegar but I talked to someone there and you still have to come up with 4800 of your own money right off the bat. Considering I can get trained in PG for about 3k that option doesn't make sense to me. I'd be curious to hear about any other companies that are doing that though.

That hydrovac job I posted, starting experienced guys at $30.00/hr,he has to have a helper who usually is in training anyways,he probably makes $20.00/hr and gets to drive legally while getting miles under the belt.

I also think Fracmaster and Schlumberger were offering to train.

I'll check with my buddy in Hinton when he gets back on his week off. He's working for one of those nitrogen pumping companies in the patch that helps you get your class 1 while you work. Maybe he knows about some that are hiring. I think he's back middle of next week, I'll let ya know.

I applied for one of those jobs you sent me. I don't recall seeing one for a hydrovac job though.

Fracmaster or Schlumberger, they did have an ad on the hrdc site but you had to use the search term equipment operator to get the ad. Based out of Strathmore, nice and close to Calgary and still close enough to the smaller towns were you can still rent a nice mobile for $400.00/month plus utilities. I preffered living in the campgrounds when I was up there. $440.00/month rent for fully serviced pad.

Its back on that other thread somewhere,I posted it maybe to Saskanna? The best thing to do is go to their website and look for a phone number,I dont have much faith in the online app thing yet.Alberta also has an oil or energy company list on the net with the name of every company and lots of numbers for phone or fax. I dont know if its still up or not.It may even be in the Calgary sun classifieds under trades, that's another site you should hit each morning.
The patch is actually a bit slow right now depending on where you are and what your doing.
Hydrovac can be a busy job though, make lots of bucks if you dont mind wearing a rain suit all day and getting muddy.

$45.00 at any Alberta motor vehicle branch. Make copies, employers like to take them to make their own and usually forget to give them back.

We just hired a parts driver and they all had to bring in an abstract. If it does cost anything, it's like a small printing fee I think. I'm not 100% sure though.
