VICTORIA -- The dumping of raw sewage into the Pacific Ocean was an issue one man wanted to take to an all-candidates meeting in the Victoria-Beacon Hill riding Friday morning, but the costumed crusader was not allowed in.

James Skwarok arrived dressed up as "Mr. Floatie," a two-metre tall turd representing POOP, People Opposed to Outfall Pollution. Mr. Floatie also passed out toilet paper business cards.

He wanted to highlight Victoria's daily dumping of 120 million litres of raw sewage, but when he was barred from the meeting he said the refusal left him "a little bummed out."

NDP Leader Carole James, who attended the meeting in the riding she hopes to win in British Columbia's May 17 election, said she grew up in the area and swam in the ocean as a child.

She said that sewage needs to be treated and that an NDP government would look at the issue as a priority.

But Liberal MLA Jeff Bray said scientists indicate there is no negative impact from the raw sewage. He acknowledged, however, that the practice damages the city's image.

Skwaork said B.C. has got to look good for the 2010 Olympics, adding the province doesn't want to get a "brown medal."

guess what - Vancouver isn't much better! Iona Jetty provides primary treatment only, much of which by-passes treatment altogether beacause of extra volumes!

Liberal MLA Jeff Bray

There's a problem when you can only hit the supermarkets for food (not to mention the threat of "disappearance" of the native Orca population).

...........Plight of the northeastern Pacific killer whales

With these killer whales populations being the subject of much study, alarming stresses and population decline have been noted. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) upgraded the status of the northeastern Pacific killer whale populations in November of 2001. The southern resident population has been upgraded to the status "endangered", meaning that there is the threat of "imminent extinction". Transient and northern resident killer whale populations have been upgraded to the status "threatened" indicating that, if conditions are not reversed, the populations are likely to become endangered.

There are great differences in survival rate between the different populations of killer whales. Also, male killer whales have considerably shorter life expectancies than do the females. These issues will be examined in light of the bioaccumulation of PCBs......

Thought you would have picked up on the Saint John reference, since you're from Fredericton.

I travel alot to the smelly city. Not unlike Halifax/Dartmouth most ports are polluted beyond control. Here in NB Irving gets 500 to 5000 dollar fines for dumping raw crap in the harbour. Then again they own the province so its no big deal.

Primus

John The Fisherman

When he was young you'd not find him doing well in school,
His mind would turn unto the waters.
Always the focus of adolescent ridicule,
He has no time for farmer's daughters.
Alienated from the clique society,
A lonely boy finds peace in fishing.
His mother says "john this is not the way life's supposed to be."
"don't you see the life that you are missing?"

And he says...

When i grow up i want to be,
One of the harvesters of the sea.
I think before my days are done,
I want to be a fisherman.

Now years gone by we find man that rules the sea.
He sets out on a dark may morning .
To bring his catch back to this small community.
He doesn't see the danger dawning.
Four hours up, oh the ocean swelled and swelled,
The fog rolled in it started raining.
"the starboard bow." "oh my god we're going down!"
The do not hear his frantic mayday.

And he says

When i grow up i want to be,
One of the harvesters of the sea.
I think before my days are done,
I want to be a fisherman.
"i'll live and die a fisherman."
Calling john the fisherman.

classic.............!
