Marxist Vegan Restaurant Closes After Customers No Longer Willing to Wait 40 Minutes for a Sandwich

$1:
A “Marxist” “collectivist” “worker-run” restaurant in Grand Rapids, Michigan, closed its doors this week after customers complained that they could no longer tolerate the bizarre hours, high prices and long lines.

The Garden Diner and Cafe—previously known as the Bartertown Diner—featured a vegan, vegetarian and raw food menu that had met with significant national acclaim. But the restaurant’s business model, which did not allow for bosses or managers, promised a “living wage” to all employees and a strong union, did not allow the restaurant to make enough profit to stay in business.

Worse still, while the food earned Bartertown a spot on VegNews’s “10 Hot New Vegan Restaurants” list, customers complained that it was almost impossible to get a meal at the diner.

People frequently noted on the restaurant’s Facebook page that they waited more than 40 minutes for a sandwich—and that’s when the diner was even open. Because the employees set the shop’s hours by group decision, the restaurant opened and closed at random times, leaving potential sandwich buyers totally confused.

It turns out, in a shocking revelation to the store’s management, that those Soviet bread lines were a bug, not a feature of Communism.

On Reddit, the restaurant’s frequent political statements produced fiery confrontations. Some Grand Rapids residents resented that Bartertown offered them a side of Che Guevara with every bahn mi and $2 taco. Customers also complained that the restaurants “equal pay, no tipping” scheme failed to reward exceptional service, pointing out on the message board that “you shouldn’t try running your business on political good will alone.”

Even Bartertown’s inclusive, progressive politics couldn’t please everyone in their community. When the diner offered a free meal to Grand Rapids police officers as a “thank you” for keeping their neighborhood safe, local socialists complained that the business was abrogating its core ideals by siding with fascists and supporting “nearly all-white police force in this era of police violence.”

So, in a no-win situation, and discovering first hand the troubles that have plagued Communism for more than a century, the restaurant was forced to close its doors. As one community member put it, they discovered that “you can’t make payroll and your bills with Facebook and Tumblr ‘likes.'”

The owner, for his part, is admitting his mistake. When asked what his next venture would be, he told MLive.com that he was “taking a vacation.”

How bourgeois.

He should reopen in my town! Fit in perfectly.
3 restaurants run by Chinese Canadians. One for sale 25 years, no takers, so old it's painful to watch them bring orders while limping about, closed for week every now and then while they visit specialists 1,000 km away.
One where adults still barely speak English, yet they've been up in the boonies so long they don't even remember what Asian food is supposed to taste like. Their teens convinced them frozen chicken nuggets with some kind of sauce. Long weekend? Fishing derby in town? Music festival? Shit they deserve to enjoy it too. Closed.
Only franchise is a Subway. TFWs from the Phillipines for the 3 years they're open. No one local wants to work until 9 pm or on Sat, Sun, holidays or wear a 'silly uniform' for only $12.50 an hour.
Fancy hotel in town - absentee owners. Original cook left when offered partnership in Calgary, food & service turned to shit. Last time we went there kitchen staff were playing a game noisily tossing cutlery into the bins and missing. When server told them to keep it down we heard them tell him to fuck off, who did he think he was, and made even more noise. More customers complained - the server went in there again and they started beating on the counters and singing Hi-ya-ya-ya, Hi-ya-ya-ya. Everyone left.
2 Pizza takeouts. Closed Sundays, holidays. Closed Fridays at 7 pm. One closed Mondays too. Oh yeah, 2 for 1 small pizzas pickup yourself price $35
2 places open maybe for breakfast, for lunch, closed at 2. Except Sat, Sun, holiday when they're never open at all.
Takeout chicken at gas station, stops cooking at 5 pm. Nobody wants takeout chicken for supper! There'd be a KFC if they did.
One pub left in town, reluctantly will serve food while they scowl at non-alcoholics.

The success is the seniors lunch. Donated food, volunteer staff, building and utilities covered by gov't grants. Always full of people because cheap lunch is 'be donation'. Always praised by everyone failing to realize those 35-50 customers would create real paying jobs, better food and service and no drain on tax dollars by going to a real cafe.

Like I said, they'd fit right in here!

K here's a good one for you, a real why it doesn't work story.
M brother in law is Polish, his parents defected in the late 1960s. He used to go to Poland a few times a year to visit family and later to do business.

His Dad had a farm in the early 1960s. He'd get up at dawn, go to the end of the driveway and wait for the bus. The bus would carry him 80 miles to the city and drop him at a depot.
He'd fill out the form, and get a gassed up tractor which he'd drive back to the farm and use for the day. He'd have to stop about 2:00 and drive the tractor back to the factory because it closed at 4:30 pm. Then take the bus back home. The depot was closed weekends. A couple times he was punished - no tractor for a week - because it broke down and wasn't returned by closing time that day.
So if you were haying, where you like 5 days of good weather - you better hope it was sunny Monday-Friday so you could get SOME of the harvest!

He now jokes how it's lucky we 'beat' the commies in the 1980s, because we never could nowadays. The business rules & regs and procedures are so damn complex and you can't just join the Party or slip Uncle So and So a few bucks to fix things!

Even worse, I had a friend who tried to Mao down on too much of their food and got a bad case of the Trotskys. He tried Stalin for time so he could to get to a toilet but too late he had it coming out the Pyongyang right there in the restaurant and soiled their good table Lenins. If anyone tells you the food here is good, don't believe their Bolshevik.

Why am I posting, WHY

>"Communism doesn't work because worker-controlled businesses fail in capitalism"

Yeah, that's the fucking problem with capitalism. Workers can't get a fair deal by economic demand; running employees into the ground for profits sake is the only way for business to survive. It's not communism when it must compete within capitalism with capitalists. Good things can't survive long in capitalism, it's gotta be soulless to make it.

K no more I swear bye

Odd. "Soulful" or "good" isn't something that is usually associated with communism. :|
