I don't think you're meeting the right Americans, Drumer. There are plenty who look to us as a good example, a country to emulate, and others who are ambivalent. The ones who hate Canada tend to be a lot louder is all...like a spoiled rich kid at a party.

I've been living in the US for nearly 8 years now and I have yet to meet a yank that has anything bad to say about Canada or Canadians.
Infact whenever I come back for Canada I always bring a couple of flats of beer with me and all my Yankee buddies really love it. I tell them stories of how AMAZING the bud is up there and they all wish that they could visit. I also show pictures from my tree planting days in the backwoods of BC and they are astonished at how beautiful it is.
What can anyone (Yank or not) possibly say bad about Canada or Canadians aside form "It's cold".

Not all Americans hate Canada. In fact, numerous Americans I know think very highly of the Great North, and believe we're more free than they are.
Some conservative Americans hate Canada's politics, because as you know, we are under a liberal government right now. They'll take shots at anything. Be it the cold weather, the way we say "eh", or the fact that Celine Dion is from Quebec.
There's no reason to let it get to you. Look at it like that show "Kids Say The Darndest Things". You don't get mad at them when they don't know what the capital of Canada is, do you? You might say "Well, Americans should know better than five year olds!" See, this is where you're wrong about the people of the USA. As friendly as some of them may be, they have little or no exposure to Canadians, other than what they see in their own country from Canada. They get our maple syrup, our bacon, our hockey players, and our comedians. Thus, that is what they think Canada is all about. Don't take it personally! Just smile and laugh..and if you want a really good time, play along with their ridiculous comments. Claim we have no running water, or electricity. State we live in polar bear infested frozen wastelands. You'll be surprised as to how much fun it is.

I generally have to agree. For the year that I lived in NC I met no people who disliked Canada (with the exception of some anti-Canuck mudslinging during their invasion of Iraq). Most people were very interested in aspects of our culture such as universal health care, lack of firearm deaths, liberal drug ideals and such. A lot of people wished they could move here.

.....of course there were just as many people who didn't have a frigging clue about ANYTHING Canadian.........how can you dislike something you don't know exists?

The reason some Ameriicans hate Canada is simple:

There are two kinds of Americans: those who are educated and those who aren't. By educated I mean taught to think for oneself. There's a great article in this months Harper's Magazine that bears this out. The article asserts that the school system in the US is designed to produce a conformist and submissive population which is supposed to belive what ever someone in authority says.

Despite this there are good number of people who overcome this kind of social programming. These are the people you see calling for reason and sanity in America today all the while the majority of Americans completely believe the daily dose of lies coming from the White House. Thse are the people who admire Canada for its progressive policies which, if they were suggested in the US, would have the proponent of such ideas called a Communist.

We've all met these people in Canada as well. There are the people who think for themselves and have an open mind about things. Then there are the people with no interest in learing about anything. The problem in the US is that the know-nothings are starting to take over.

i spent many years trucking all over the US and I mean ALL OVER and never met anyone who didnt like Canada/canadians except Detroit fans..LOL Mosdt of the folks I met were regular down to earthj peeps and working stiffs likie me... we arent that different you know... Just some have a longer summer than others LOLO

I have been into the states only once I had ,about five years ago ,a bad experience I took a load of bagged wood shavings from Entwhistle to a littlle place just outside of LA.I was in Utah at a truck stop filling up.When this yahoo started beaking off about us Canadians taking away their jobs by coming into the state he ragged on me a good five minutes when he shut up I asked where he just come from trying to be friendly.Know what he said He had just come from abbotsford how's that for the pot calling the kettle black"I swore I would never return to the state .I never once said a mean disparaging remark .He just up and let me have it with both barrels.But after reading posts from electricbuford and iron mike I am going to take a tripp into the states on thanksgiving in OCT.
So keep up the good work guys I am slowly becomming friendly to the states ,Well not their government

The problem with this view is that it assumes that if you do not hold specific views on specific subjects then you are not open minded and were a conformist and not taught to think. This is a dangerous position don't you think? This statement kind of sounds like if you hate George B. (for example) you are obviously like me, thus correct and smart....maybe even handsome but if you like George B, well then obviously your parents were brother and sister and strove to make sure your education was the worst they could attain for you. This is kind of a dangerous jump of logic isn't it?

BTW- Sorry my Canadian friends, I just don't like Celine Dion. I've tried, god knows i've tried. Maybe I'm just to much of a conformist eh?
