CALGARY — A bill that has raised the spectre of Alberta parents hauling teachers before human rights tribunals is an offensive attempt to placate ultra right-wing conservatives, says the man whose legal crusade forced the province to rewrite its human rights legislation.

This weekend, Alberta's teachers slammed proposed new rules that would give parents sweeping rights to pull kids from classes on touchy subjects, and be notified in advance when lessons focus on religion, sexuality or sexual orientation.

The new measures were included as part of Bill 44, which enshrines gay rights in the province 11 years after they were imposed by the Supreme Court of Canada in a case that caused an ugly backlash in Alberta. In an interview yesterday, Alberta Culture and Community Spirit Minister Lindsay Blackett admitted that the provincial caucus wrote the school provisions into the bill as an olive branch to religious groups and conservative voters who might be offended by the province's move to codify gay rights.

ahh wonderful, the teachers are getting upset because some children may be excluded from any new fads in social engineering...TFB. Whatever happened to teaching kids Literature, Science, Math, History and Geography(yes, mastering these matters makes one ignorant )? If they want to discuss matters of sexuality, they should talk to a parent or counsellor in private.

The title could just have likely been, "School Curriculum and Parent's Rights Under Attack by Leftist Agenda"

Some times teachers are a little overzealous in their 'idealism' and give kids unrealistic expectations..... they fail to teach kids that we live in the real world and not an ideal one.

Kids need to know that not everyone is a winner, nor are all created equal.

Its still their choice is it not?

I can argue that schools breed ignorance also. I have friends that are teachers that would openly admit that they are not the sharpest tools in the toolshed.

That's truly amazing! I never realised that going to teachers college for 2 years automatically made one superior than all others. I guess that's why they came up with the statement; "those that can't, teach"

So I guess the Human Rights comissions are only good when they attack chritians and folks who work in resteraunts but don't want to wash their hands.

Well, it's their choice to join the PTA or have their kids home schooled, disrupting the class has always been a No - No.

How is not being there disrupting the class? It's not like they're chanting . Was having JWs leave the classroom during O Canada and The Lord's Prayer disruptive?
