Millions of people arguing over which fictional being is more superior than another?

Why is this so important to people?

BeaverFever BeaverFever:

El was also the name and/or tittle of various pre-judaism Bronze Age pagan deities in the levant and Near Middle East and was also a generic word used by polytheists as a common noun to refer to any god. El was the name of the supreme god of the Canaanites.

As in Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Raquel, Remiel and Sariel.

$1:
They differ fundamentally.

The God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament do too.

. I didn't know that for those names but it makes sense! I believe the name Israel (Yisrael) is a reference to the deity as well.

Interesting article on the merger of Israel and Judah cultures, which probably explains a lot of the name change

Not names of God, but names of Gods that got demoted to lower levels with the upswing of monotheism.

People are hard wired for tribalism.

What's funny is the number of hardcore atheists who regularly show
up and start talking like they know something.

Interesting comment.

With religion itself being a belief an atheist would have their own beliefs.

Insinuating that atheists know nothing, what makes any group more 'correct' than another?

Interesting interpretation of my comment.

I was referring to the idea of the atheists walking in and commenting about
how deeply they know Christianity, and how stupid it is.

And then usually tack on how Islam is a religion of peace.

It's an extremely rare few people who do not hold religious beliefs.

While there are people who advance a scientific perspective to global warming there's a lot more for whom this is a religious belief and they don't tolerate heretics and they want non-believers persecuted.

People are just wired to be religious and if you take away the traditional religious beliefs from them then you have to be ready for them to adopt a new belief.

In the atheist USSR the leadership understood this and they replaced the Orthodox Church with the new god of The Almighty State. The State demanded worship and any variance of dogma was met with severe reprisal.

Some people attribute religious qualities to their favorite sports teams. Or their favorite brand of car.

It's just who we are as human beings is all.

Religion is taught. We are not wired to be religious.

Religion isn't a natural course of the human race. There are far more non-religious people than you think.

It's precisely why churches all over Canada are closing by the hundreds, each year.

Humans don't need something to believe in, they are taught that they should believe in a certain God, but they need to belong and if that means a church or a community organization, they can fulfill that need in many ways.

You're interpreting 'religion' and 'religious belief' as involving supernatural deities.

Religious belief comes in many forms and all it really amounts to is a devout but unfounded and unsubstantiated belief in something.

You can devoutly believe that vegetarianism is the "right" way to live. Doesn't matter that you're suffering from malnutrition or that your kids suffer from malnutrition all you know is what you believe and to you it is real.

See what I'm saying here?
