I got this one a few months ago which I really like. The picture automatically changes dimensions to fit the incoming signal. The ambi-light is actually very nice as well.

If you're viewing directly at the screen and not from the side, Plasma has the better picture. If you have different viewing angles and there's lots of windows with light the others may work out better.

50" Plasma Flat HDTV
Pixel Plus 2 HD with Ambi-Light

Enjoy the ultimate viewing experience with this Philips integrated HDTV with Pixel Plus 2 HD, Ambilight 2 and the latest Plasma technology.

Had my Toshiba 52 inch DLP HDTV for two years now. Love it! The picture quality (especially in HD) is outstanding.

What Regina said about lighting is very important. Plasma is not a friend of bright light. It might be a Toshiba thing (how they handled it) but side viewing or strange angle viewing of my DLP is actually very good.

Hope you have a surround sound system to go with it. It really makes the investment worth it.

As for LG? When they first came out they had a rep sorta like what Hyundai was like 15 years ago. Now? They produce top notch stuff. Have not heard any complaints about them in ages.

PS. Prepare to watch shows you never thought you would for a while with the HD channels. I watched the most boring shows ever on PBS (piano lessons??) just because the pic quality was so insane ;)

True.......HD channels make the viewing wild. I didn't think I had a bad picture with regular TV, but when I got HD I couldn't believe the difference. I'm spoiled now.......

Grey Cup in HD... [drool]

Question for the widescreen owners:

How come the black bands are still visible when playing a widescreen movie?
When I was in the stores the other day all the widescreen format TV's weren't using the entire screen to display the movie, it was like the regular TV equivalent of the letterbox. I checked the movie and it was widescreen.

It has to do with the settings of the TV itself. Most guys in the stores can't be bothered to find out how each model changes this function. Almost all of the 16:9 TVs are capable of "spreading" the 4:3 picture to the full width of the screen. My Toshiba does it by leaving the centre un-stretched and then minutely spreading the image to the edges. Totally un-noticable to my eye.

The same will apply to a widescreen movie. If the TV is not configured properly then it will black stripe the sides. My sister's TV was like that for two weeks before I went for a visit  It took me a bit to figure out everything my 52HM84 DLP could do.

There are some people that cannot stand 16:9 but still buy the 16:9 TV........... makes no sense to me. [huh]

My dad has two LCD's with HD satellite. One is at least 50" and the other 40". I think the whites on LCD are the best. He uses the HDMI cable with his.

Thanks for helping clear that up. I noticed it and in the words of Arsenio Hall "It was one of things that make you go hmmm...". The salesclerk couldn't tell me why. I think we'll be replacing the "Behemoth" next year sometime. I'm not looking forward to wrestling a 200+ lb TV down the basement stairs.

This is the TV I'd buy with unlimited fundage. Sure, it's only 11 inches, but it's 1080p, the screen part is a paper-thin 3mm thick, it's got a million-to-one contrast ratio, and just overall slicker than snot.

Brother-in-law got a 47' and he had it on high def all the time so it was better resolution but cropped the display so that the edges were a grey background. After a few months that of course burned into the screen and you can now see it when he goes full screen. Lesson: go big when you stay home.

My screen adjusts itself to any signal so there is no black bars. If it's in the old format, it will stretch it to fill the screen lateral and horizontally. It even does it for commercials where it sits for a few seconds then automatically adjusts itself to fill the screen. I think Philips is the only one that has that technology.......I think.
