I pulled out an "old" (five years) pair of Advent wireless speakers that I was never happy with - for some time now I've thought about tearing them apart and making them into something I could actually use, and apparently today was the day.

After pulling it all apart I found what I expected - a whole bunch of stuff I don't understand and two wires leading to each speaker

I figured I could remove the shitty headphone speakers and replace them with a 1/8" stereo jack, which would basically leave me with a wireless transmitter that I could connect to a simple pair of desktop speakers, or even another set of more comfortable headphones.

My first instinct was to use the jack from an old diskman I had, since it had both a 'line out' jack and a 'headphone' jacks.

Now, my questions are this:
1) is there any difference between the 'line out' and 'headphone' jacks themselves?
2) it looks like there are four or five soldering points on each jack, but is there somehow I can figure out which connect to the two wires for each channel?
3) are there any other factors I'm not considering?

I realize it would be an order of magnitude easier to find a female jack cable end instead of the circuit-board type, but I don't have any cable kicking around that I want to cut up, so I'm hoping to try this first. This is purely for the hell of it, so it's not a big deal to experiment.

Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

Oh boy, man you must have been bored or something.

I'd love to help but I'd probably just end up screwing you up because I really don't know what the hell talking about.

My advise, find yourself a woman, if you can figure out how her wires work will never have to worry about wiring problems again.

"what the hell talking about" is fairly straight forward - I want to swap the speakers for a stereo jack.

As for finding a woman, I've got one and she's about as helpful in this regard as you have been.

The difference I can tell between line out and phones out is that line out is a constant, low volume. Phones out drives speakers directly so it has to be higher power and volume controlled. My guess is that since these speakers look like, as you say, headphone type speakers, hooking up their wires to a phones type jack would be just fine for anything that's happy to plug in to a phones jack.

My guess is that multiple solder points on the jacks are for switches or some such to tell the device whether or not there's a plug in them.

The only factor I can think of that you'll need to be aware of is that amplifiers need a certain impedance on the thing they're driving otherwise they'll blow. Put a 4 ohm speaker on an amp that needs an 8 ohm speaker and you'll have a dead amp. That said, I think you'll still be fine plugging another set of speakers into a jack that you've hooked the speaker wires to.
