I'm watching an interesting program on Discovery. It's the program Mean Machines, and they are comparing the Ford and Volvo as police vehicles. So far the Crown Vic is kicking ass.

volvo seems to excel in it's braking and that's what won the competition. However, the newer Crown Vics now have the ABS that they were lacking during this competition.

I drove both operationally, still drive the Crown Vic. The Volvo is a much nicer drive, handles well, is quick but its just too small. Very cramped with all the equipment in front and the back seat with a cage is pretty useless.

The Crown Vic is adequate in all aspects and is operationally superior to the Volvo.

First I thought that Crown Princess Victoria, our next Royall regent, was lashing out on Volvo.
Canada have Volvos as police vehicles?

The Crown Vic!

I'm sure the Volvo does well in Europe where most cruiser type vehicles have way less equipment installed but the Crown Vic is the quintessential North American cop car with nothing that can really out score it in all categories.

We had a couple and they were popular for the speed and handling but were less than practical for operational use.

They are quick though!

It is interesting to note the ignorance expressed when it comes to ABS.

When the Caprice was first used as a Police vehicle there were many mishaps resulting from the practice of sliding into a blocking position.....the ABS stopped the rear end busting loose and defeated the procedure. As a result Caprice supplied to Police lacked this feature. The Caprice was dropped and the Crown Vics owned the field. Police resist ABS for this reason.

In the US many 5L Mustangs are used by police but they are useless in transporting prisoners and are limited to traffic control. In the GTA, the OPP has used Camero Irocs as pursuit vehicle on 401.

Currently a Crown Vic is not obtainable for civilians---they are produced strictly for TAXIs and Police. The Grand Marquis is really the same critter, with ABS and cloth seats. Ford makes more profit building these than any other model......no retooling/retraining costs.....just keep punching them out.

I kinda agree. Early ABS was not popular with the troops. The Vics we now get are pretty much loaded, despite the very same outside look.

I'm happy with 'em and I'm a very picky Limey/Pom.

The California Highway Patrol tested out the Volvo 850 about ten years ago and it did poorly. The front wheel drive was a disadvantage in certain manuvers and, as stated, it was too small. It did have a superior top speed, it had excellent handling in selected conditions, but overall it lacked in an awful lot of areas.

And I own a Volvo 850 which I really love so don't think I'm down on Volvo - just saying it like it is. It's just not a good cop car but it is an awesome car for commuting and long drives.

In California the Camaro is a popular pursuit car and the new up and comer as a police car is the Dodge Charger Police Interceptor.

I know that they use Volvos in Britain.. but then again they don't have much to offer in that department.
I don't know what Swedish Police use today. Haven't given it much thought. Could be becaus I'm not overly fond of Swedish Police.
