Stars moving away from us have a low frequency, therefore the light spectrum shifts to the red. Stars moving towards us have a high frequency, therefore the light spectrum shifts to the blue.

Stand by a road and listen for a car coming towards you and then passing you. High pitch coming towards, low pitch moving away. It's called the Doppler effect and is used in speed radar guns.
