My eldest son(he's 14) was asking about one of these for a Christmas present. How many of you have them and what are your thoughts on them? He asked for a Kindle 2 or a Kindle DX. I found out that you have to download books from Amazon.com only though...or that is what I was told.

I just bought the Sony PRS-505. After it arrived, 2 other co-workers bought the same model. I love my Sony. Sony has an eLibrary Store )which can only be used in North America) but it supports book formats from almost every other source. Mine is loaded with about 100 Technical refernce books that are all in PDF. Take a look at the specs, I think you will be impressed.

whenever something approaches the cost of one of those $300 laptops with the 10" screen, then I lose interest.

I think they are still too expensive, they should be around the $100 mark. For the price they are now you can get a cheap netbook.

I still prefer the eBook reader over a netbook becasue of the eInk technology. I paid $250 for my reader and I wouldn't trade it in for the world. Well, maybe the world...

You might want to wait a month or two...

The Sony PRS-300 is good, non touch screen so no glare. Do not get a Sony touch screen one as they have a problem with glare. The amazon kindle is now available in Canada, has the benefit of a 3G wireless connection so you can subscribe to newspapers etc. The kindle has lots of features that are worth checking out. On the downside Amazon has been known to remove books from peoples kindles once Amazon loses the rights to sell it.

Amazon has over 360,000 books, Sony has over a million FREE books, threw partnership with Google any book out of copyright is free for the Sony readers. Sony ebooks do not require you to by the book from Sony, unlike Amazon where every book has to be bought from them. There are also lots of sites out there that offer free books for the Sony reader for download, or at lest cheaper downloads of the book.

As for the apple tablet, it is a tablet or more to the point it is a larger and more powerful Iphone, not an ebook reader. The whole point of an ebook is the eInk, which makes it "feel" like you are reading a book and not a screen which is A LOT easier on the eyes.

Edit: P.S. I have the Sony PRS-300 and love it.
